Finding Peace After Unthinkable Loss

A Knock No Parent Wants to Hear

Rita knew the moment she opened the door that something was wrong. The local sheriff standing on her porch wasn’t there for a routine visit—and the look on his face said it all. Within seconds, her life changed forever.

He gently delivered the devastating news: Rita’s only child, Jennifer, had passed away.

“She had some health issues,” Rita explained, “but nothing I saw as life-threatening. My world crumbled. Jennifer was my reason for being.”

When Grief Becomes a Wall

Rita’s grief overwhelmed her. She couldn’t bear the thought of carrying on with normal life. Work became unbearable. Church felt like too much. And she definitely couldn’t face the questions people often ask when they don’t know what else to say: “Are you okay?” or worse—“It will be okay.”

“I felt abandoned by God—I had served Him the best I could.”

Her prayers fell silent. The God she once leaned on felt far away. She didn’t stop believing—but she did stop reaching.

A Spark of Hope

Then one day, Rita heard a message that changed everything. While watching a preacher on TV, she heard these words:

God never allows someone to be removed from your life until their work in your life is complete.

That moment brought clarity through the fog. Jennifer’s life had been a precious gift from God—given during a season when Rita needed her the most. And while Jennifer’s mission was complete, Rita’s was not.

“God allowed her to return to Him,” Rita said, “but He left me here on earth for a purpose—and I needed to find it.”

Rediscovering Her Anchor

Step by step, Rita began to seek God again. She returned to prayer and opened her Bible. She found Inspiration Ministries and began receiving daily devotionals.

One day, Romans 8:38–39 (ESV) came alive with new meaning:

Nothing … will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In that moment, Rita’s anger and pain began to lift. She saw Jennifer not only as her daughter—but as a beautiful reminder of God’s unending love. And Jennifer’s final words—“I know you love me unconditionally, Mom”—became a sacred echo in Rita’s heart.

Beauty from Ashes

Rita’s story doesn’t end in loss. It continues in purpose. She now shares her story with others walking through deep sorrow, reminding them that God can meet them in their darkest places.

“God’s not surprised by what you’re feeling,” she says. “He’s the only one who can get you through it. Give Him your ashes, so He can make a crown of beauty for you” (Isaiah 61:3).

Grief is real—but so is grace. And God’s love is strong enough to carry us through both.
