David Brewer was born on this day in 1837 in an area today that is currently part of Turkey. His parents were missionaries, but he grew up in America. He dedicated himself to the legal profession, first as an attorney and then a judge. He so impressed others that he was appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1889, where he served until his death in 1910.

He was outspoken about the importance of Christianity and Biblical beliefs. In 1892, he wrote a book called The United States: A Christian Nation. He knew that some had argued that Christians should not be active in the political arena. But he wrote, “There is no incompatibility between Christianity and patriotism.” He felt that Christians have a “duty” to be involved.

In his eulogy at Brewer’s funeral, US Attorney General George Wickersham said that Brewer’s life had been “one of service.” Quoting from Deuteronomy 1, he described how Brewer had put his faith into practice by being concerned about serving others. He had given his life to preserving freedom and a Biblical basis for law.

Today, the world needs people like David Brewer, who are committed to God’s Word and truth and who will not compromise. Ask God to help you be a person of integrity. Base your life on His Word. Be willing to get involved as He leads you. Seek to serve others and show His love toward everyone.
