When Our Maps Fall Short

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In “When Our Maps Fall Short,” reflect on how human understanding remains incomplete and why God’s Word provides the only reliable guide for navigating life with wisdom and trust.

“Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

In the 15th century, Christopher Columbus discovered a new land, but he hadn’t reached his original destination of China and East Asia.

Ferdinand Magellan and others proved that China could be reached by sailing westward, but the journey was long and perilous. Many believed there was a faster, shorter route—a northwest passage.

The quest for this passage became a kind of obsession as John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, and others embarked on dangerous voyages of exploration. They were forced to rely on maps that were incomplete—drawn more out of speculation than fact. Voyage after voyage resulted in failure, and hundreds died.

With each new voyage, the maps became more accurate. Finally in 1854, the Northwest Passage was discovered via a partial land route. The full sea discovery didn’t take place until 1906 although it was quite inaccessible, located far to the north of the Arctic Circle.

We all depend upon various kinds of maps to chart our way through life. Yet all our human maps are incomplete. As Paul wrote, we only know in part and “see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror” (NLT).

However, God has given us a timeless, eternally true map, accurate in every detail … His Word. As a signpost to guide us, it’s packed with principles to help us make decisions and know right from wrong. Depend on God’s Word to direct you in every part of life.

Reflection Question: Where am I relying on my own map instead of God’s Word?
