Planning Lightly, Trusting Fully

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

James 4 calls us to approach the future with humility, planning lightly, trusting fully, and resting in God’s will as we remember how brief and dependent on Him our lives truly are.

“You do not know what tomorrow will bring … you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that’” (James 4:14–15).

In 1579, Sir Francis Drake ventured far up the western coast of South and North America. The voyage was a guarded secret, in part to keep from antagonizing the Spanish, but also because Drake planned to discover the fabled Northwest Passage.

Drake wasn’t alone in his quest. Many thought they would be able to find this passage. Gerardus Mercator, the great Flemish mapmaker, confidently included the passage on his world maps. He was convinced there was a straight and short way open into the West even as far as China. This path only required that someone take the right course.

Men like Mercator based their maps on speculation, assumptions, and guesses. Their maps were more about hopes than reality. Eventually, the Northwest Passage was discovered, and its location proved the theories of men like Mercator and Drake inaccurate.

The struggle of these explorers and mapmakers reminds us of the way many people approach their lives—confident and sure of their answers, even if their answers are wrong. But the Bible reminds us how little each of us really knows and how important it is to be humble and trust God.

Remember that your life is “a mist.” You don’t really know what will happen even later today. Surrender your life anew to Jesus. Follow Him. Let Him take away your burdens and direct your path.

Reflection Question: How does remembering life’s brevity shape my plans today?
