A Mighty Fortress

A Mighty Fortress

Fear filled hearts throughout Christian Europe. The Ottoman Turks were on the march, inspired by an aggressive religion. Their goal: to make Europe an Islamic continent. They already had conquered much of Eastern Europe, and besieged Vienna, and were causing havoc throughout the Mediterranean.

At the same time, Christians were divided. Many leaders were obsessed with politics and power struggles. Some primarily were focused on perceived threats posed by Martin Luther, who had begun what would be called the Reformation.

Indeed, Luther, who was born on this day in 1483, had many personal challenges. His convictions had sparked sharp opposition. He knew that the threats were real. That they were living in challenging times. More than ever, he called believers to focus on God.

Responding to these concerns, in 1530, he wrote a hymn, inspired by Psalm 46. It was called “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” Here Luther reminded believers that God is our “mighty fortress.” He realized that the problems they faced had a spiritual root, that they faced an “ancient foe” who seeks to work us woe.

He was a formidable enemy: “His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.” But, as he realized, Jesus is “on our side.” We can be sure that “He must win the battle.”

Today, no matter what happens in the world, you don’t have to be afraid or worry. As Luther wrote, we can be sure because “God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.” Do not give in to doubt or defeat. Remember that God has given you power over the enemy. His doom is sure, and “one little word shall fell him.” Make God your fortress.
