Families Saved

Daily Devotional•3 Minutes

Who in your family are you still praying will come to know Jesus? The jailer in Acts 16 watched his whole household find salvation in a single night.

“The jailer called for lights and rushed in … he fell down before Paul and Silas … ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household’” (Acts 16:29–31).

The jailer was terrified, trembling with fear. An earthquake had struck Philippi, and he imagined that his prisoners surely had escaped! But then he heard the voices of Paul and Silas telling him that all the prisoners were still there. None had been lost. The jailer was relieved and overwhelmed. He sensed that these men had something special … and he wanted it.

When Paul told him about Jesus and salvation, the jailer was saved that very night! Paul also explained that his entire household could have this same salvation. The jailer wanted them, too, to experience the peace and joy of knowing Jesus, so he had Paul share the Gospel with his family, and they all were saved and rejoiced together! (v. 34).

The Bible reveals God’s concern for our families—parents, children, brothers, sisters, spouses. It describes how men like Joshua were strong leaders of their families: At a time when others drifted away from their faith, Joshua proclaimed, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).

Today, commit your family to God, those near and far, young and old. Pray for them. Witness to them. Reach out to them. Be an example. If they have needs, don’t give up.

You can know that God is concerned about them, and He is ready and willing to work in their lives. He wants all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4).

Reflection Question: Write a prayer of faith that your family members will accept salvation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “you and your household will be saved” mean family members are saved automatically through one person’s faith?

No—the household still had to hear and believe; Acts 16:32 shows Paul explicitly sharing the Gospel with the whole family before verse 34 says they were baptized.

What can I do if family members aren’t ready to hear about faith?

Consistent prayer and lived example matter as much as words—Joshua’s declaration in Joshua 24:15 was backed by a lifetime of visible commitment, not a single conversation.

How should I pray for family members who haven’t professed faith?

Pray specifically and by name, asking God to soften hearts and provide opportunities—and stay engaged relationally rather than only praying from a distance.
