Free from Anxieties

What would it take for you to stop worrying about the things you cannot control?

“The present form of this world is passing away. I want you to be free from anxieties” (1 Corinthians 7:31–32).

The church was founded during a time of tremendous uncertainty for Christians. They had many reasons to be anxious. But Paul encouraged them to remember that “the present form of this world is passing away.” This “present form” included the political, military, social, and economic climate. There was persecution and ostracism, stress and mental uncertainty, even physical danger or death.

It would have been easy to focus on “the present form” of things. But Paul urged them to remember that all of this was “passing away.” The Greek word here also could be translated “passing by,” as though all their external conditions were moving past—as on a conveyor belt, in modern terms.

As they observed these things, they could be absorbed or obsessed, perceiving them as the only realities. However, their attitude could change by keeping in mind that all these worldly forms were just temporary … passing away … passing by.

Paul explained that we can be free from anxieties when we surrender our lives to Jesus and stay focused on eternity. Instead of being worried, we can focus on the Kingdom that will not fade away and on our timeless relationship with God.

Today, remember these truths in your life. You can be sure that the “present form” of the world is passing away. Make sure you are ready for the future. Be free from all anxieties! Serve Jesus. He is our Rock and sure foundation.

Reflection Question: What worries can you picture passing by, like on a conveyor belt?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “the present form of this world is passing away” mean?

The Greek word (schema) refers to the outward‚ changeable shape of things—political structures‚ social status‚ material circumstances—as opposed to what is lasting. Paul isn’t saying the world is ending immediately‚ but that its current arrangement is temporary.

Why does Paul connect worldly pressures to anxiety in this passage?

He was writing to a church facing real hardship (v. 26‚ “present distress”). His counsel was to hold present circumstances loosely‚ since eternal realities—not shifting external conditions—determine what ultimately matters for a believer’s identity and hope.
