The Fixed Day

Do you live each day aware that it matters for eternity? In Acts 17, Paul tells the Athenians about a day that’s already been fixed.

“The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness” (Acts 17:30–31).

In his message to the Athenians, Paul described the grace of God as well as His righteousness. Throughout history, many people have been ignorant, not knowing about the true God or the Gospel—that Jesus died for them.

But as Paul explained, the Lord has “overlooked” this ignorance. Peter adds that God “is not slow to fulfill his promise … but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Even so, the Day of Judgment will come. This day has been “fixed,” and it will take place. Like the Athenians, some won’t even think about this Day of Judgment; others may assume it will never come; while others simply laugh or find the whole subject curious.

But Paul said the right response was to “repent.” This was the same message preached by John the Baptist and Jesus. We’re to change our minds, go in a different direction, be serious, and get our lives right with God.

Clearly, this is a message for unbelievers. They need to know that the day of the Lord is coming, when they will have to face God and give an account of their lives. But this also is a message for believers … Tell others the Good News! Some may mock and reject you; others may ignore the message. But, as happened in Athens, some will be saved!

Reflection Question: Ask God to give you boldness to share the Gospel with those around you.

Frequently Asked Questions

If God “overlooked” earlier ignorance, why does He now command repentance?

The “overlooking” describes patience during eras with less revelation, not approval; the fuller revelation of Christ raises the standard of accountability for those who hear it.

Why preach about judgment if it might make people uncomfortable?

Paul modeled telling the whole truth—both grace and judgment—because both are necessary to understand why the Gospel matters and what it rescues people from.

How should belief in a coming day of judgment shape everyday choices?

It reframes decisions with eternal weight—not as fear-driven behavior, but as living with awareness that today’s choices matter beyond today.
