senior woman praying by the hospital bed of her husband, trusting God in financial hardship

Trusting God Through Financial Hardship and Loss

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries•9 Minutes

When bills are piling up, someone you love is suffering, and you cannot see what comes next, trusting God can become more than something you say. It becomes a daily decision.

Sharon learned that during one of the hardest seasons of her life. For two years, she cared for her husband, Al, as he battled urethral carcinoma. Financial pressure mounted, exhaustion set in, and Sharon reached the limits of her own strength.

Yet in the middle of that uncertainty, God was teaching her what it meant to trust Him.

How Do You Trust God in Financial Hardship?

Sharon happened upon an Inspiration Ministries program teaching about sowing seeds during a time when she desperately needed hope.

“I was at the point of total exhaustion. For two years, I had been the 24/7 caretaker of my husband Al as he battled urethral carcinoma. God supernaturally strengthened me day by day to care for him.”

Her circumstances had not suddenly become easy. Her husband was still sick. The bills were still there. Sharon was still tired.

But faith does not require you to deny what you are facing. Faith calls you to trust God in the middle of it.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

Sharon could not see how everything would work out, but she wanted her actions to reflect her trust in God.

“I wanted to be obedient to God’s command—and I wanted to show that I trusted God.”

That distinction matters. Biblical giving is not an attempt to buy God’s favor or force Him to produce a particular result. God is not controlled by the size of a gift. Salvation itself is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not something anyone can earn (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Instead, giving can become an act of worship and obedience—a seed sown with faith in God rather than confidence in circumstances.

Faith Is Not a Gamble

Financial fear can tempt you to search desperately for a way out. Sharon understands that temptation.

“The bills stressed me so much, I tried to play the lottery thinking God might help me win and solve our problems that way. I found out God doesn’t need that kind of help; He is not a player!”

Her words point to an important spiritual lesson: trusting God is different from gambling on an outcome.

Faith does not say, “God, I will do this if You guarantee that.”

Faith says, “Lord, I trust You even when I cannot see what You are doing.”

Jesus taught that your Heavenly Father knows what you need (Matthew 6:31–33). Paul also taught believers to give willingly, reminding them that “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Seedtime and harvest are biblical principles, but God remains Lord of the harvest. Paul assured the Corinthians that God “supplies seed to the sower and bread for food” and multiplies what is sown (2 Corinthians 9:10).

You can sow. You can obey. You can trust.

God gives the growth.

An Unexpected Provision Arrives

Sharon chose to sow her seed in faith.

Within a week, a letter arrived in the mail. She assumed another bill was waiting inside.

Instead, she discovered something completely unexpected.

“To my total surprise, it was a check from my husband’s disability retirement. We didn’t even know they owed him anything more. God is totally amazing!”

Sharon received that unexpected payment with gratitude to God.

It allowed them to catch up on bills, but it also gave them something money cannot truly measure—time to enjoy one another without the same immediate financial pressure hanging over them.

Sharon even arranged a surprise 64th birthday celebration for Al. She did not know how precious those days would soon become.

Can You Trust God Through Grief?

Only days after his birthday celebration, Al passed away.

The answer Sharon needed was no longer simply financial provision. Now she needed the comfort and strength of God in grief.

“God has been our strength and comfort through this cancer battle. I’m so grateful God took him before his suffering got worse. My husband was a great example and loved by many because He loved God so much. He read his Bible every day, and I know my husband is safe in Heaven.”

Scripture never tells you that grief is easy. It tells you that you do not have to grieve without hope and that you do not walk through grief alone.

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18).

For those who belong to Jesus Christ, death does not have the final word. Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

That is where the deepest victory in Sharon’s story is found.

Not in a check or avoiding painful circumstances.

The victory is Jesus Christ.

He died for our sins, rose from the grave, and defeated death. Because of Him, those who place their faith in Christ can receive forgiveness, eternal life, and hope that reaches beyond the grave.

The Harvest of Persevering Faith

Looking back, Sharon is thankful for what God taught her about trusting Him and sowing in faith.

“It works! It may not come right when we wish it would, but if we stay in faith, it comes when we need it. God is seldom early, but He’s never late!”

God’s Word tells you not to become weary in doing good: “for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Sometimes the harvest is provision. Sometimes it is endurance strengthened through suffering. Sometimes it is a deeper dependence on Christ. Sometimes you may not recognize everything God was doing until much later.

Through every season, Jesus remains victorious.

You Can Trust Him Today

Perhaps you are carrying your own financial burden, caring for someone you love, or grieving a loss that has left an empty place in your life.

Bring it to Jesus.

Tell Him what you need. Search His Word. Ask Him for wisdom. Obey what He shows you, and trust His character even when you cannot yet see His answer.

And if you do not know Jesus as your Savior, the greatest need He came to meet is deeper than any financial problem. Sin separates every person from God, but Jesus died in our place and rose again so that everyone who believes in Him can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

Your circumstances may change. Your season may be painful. Your answers may arrive differently than you expected.

But Jesus Christ is still Lord.

He is the Victor.
