A Match Made in Faith

A Match Made in Faith

From a prison cell to an operating room, see how God transformed Dwayne and Sonya’s lukewarm faith into a life of steadfast prayer.

A Frightening Diagnosis

It did not feel like an answered prayer at first. It felt like a call to prayer. In hindsight, for Dwayne and Sonya, it was both.

What began as a troubling health concern became a long and painful journey through uncertainty, disappointment, and deep personal testing.

By Thanksgiving 2023, Sonya’s weight loss and yellowing skin were impossible to ignore. Alarmed, the couple began searching for answers. They also reached out to Inspiration Ministries for prayer.

What followed was nearly a year of exhausting uncertainty. Test after test came back negative, even as Sonya’s condition continued to worsen. With each inconclusive result, the questions grew heavier.

Then, in December 2024, they received the news they had feared. A liver specialist diagnosed Sonya with primary sclerosing cholangitis, also known as PSC, an incurable liver disease. Doctors determined that she needed a liver transplant.

The prognosis was sobering. Doctors warned them that the transplant waiting process could take months. Once again, Dwayne turned to Inspiration Ministries for prayer.

Then, just two weeks later, the phone rang. They were told to get ready.

Hope surged. But almost as quickly, it was dashed when they learned the donor match was not viable.

The disappointment was crushing. Still, they refused to let go of God.

“We learned to trust God during that time,” Dwayne shared. “It was hard, and I was so thankful for the prayer warriors who stood with us.”

The Perfect Match

Then, the call came about another match.

With only two hours to reach the hospital, everything became a blur. Sonya received her liver transplant on January 14, 2025, and her health has steadily improved ever since.

Today, more than a year later, she is doing wonderfully. For her family, January 14 remains a milestone of God’s faithfulness.

The transplant, however, is only part of what God did in their lives. To understand the full weight of their testimony, their story has to go back decades—to a much different kind of crisis.

The Prison Cell That Started It All

Dwayne and Sonya began building a life together in the 1980s. Dwayne served as a career fireman, and Sonya worked for the state. They attended church regularly, but their faith remained lukewarm.

When Dwayne retired after 25 years with the fire department, it seemed like the beginning of a promising new chapter. Instead, life began to unravel.

In 2013, one poor choice led to criminal charges and a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Dwayne.

For Sonya, the heartbreak was immediate, but so was her resolve. She never walked away.

Through every court date, every prison visit, and every lonely day of carrying the family forward, she remained by his side.

“I told him I’d be there,” she said.

And she was.

“I kept the faith,” she remembers.

Dwayne’s Turning Point

For Dwayne, prison became a wake-up call.

Everything changed one night when he read a story in a publication about a former inmate whose life had been transformed. As he read, he felt a deep conviction in his heart: One day, this will be your story.

He did not know how that could happen. He only knew that God was confronting him with the need for genuine change.

While Dwayne endured his sentence, Sonya continued praying.

Back home, she carried the weight of their world alone. Their financial security began to fade, especially after workforce reductions led to her retirement. To keep the family afloat, she accepted a position in the school system while also working nights at Kroger.

It was a season of perseverance, sacrifice, and faithfulness.

When Dwayne returned home, he faced a different kind of pressure. He knew he needed to rebuild his life, but he did not know where to begin.

Then, late one night, an Inspiration Ministries broadcast stirred something in him.

For Dwayne, the call to give was not an attempt to earn God’s help. It was an act of obedience, trust, and surrender. It was a concrete step away from the man he had been and toward the life of faith God was calling him to live.

That step also connected him with prayer ministers who continued standing with the family through the difficult years ahead.

A Faith Renewed

The Lord used that season to deepen Dwayne and Sonya’s faith and prepare them for the trials still to come.

In a moving reversal, the woman who had once prayed Dwayne through his darkest days became the woman he prayed over at night as she slept. Their shared devotion drew them closer to God and closer to one another.

As Sonya now says, “Why worry if you’re going to pray? No matter what you go through, God is there.”

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Romans 8:28 does not teach that every painful event is good. Dwayne’s imprisonment was painful. Sonya’s illness was frightening. The failed donor match was deeply disappointing.

Yet Scripture assures believers that God remains at work through every circumstance. He can use even seasons of suffering to produce repentance, perseverance, deeper faith, and greater dependence on Him.

Dwayne and Sonya planted seeds of prayer through long seasons when they could not yet see the harvest. Sonya prayed while Dwayne was in prison. Dwayne prayed while Sonya waited for a transplant. Others joined them in prayer, but God alone gave the increase.

Their testimony is not that faith shields believers from every hardship. It is that God remains faithful in every hardship.

God Is Still at Work

Dwayne and Sonya’s story reminds us that no season—a prison sentence, a frightening diagnosis, or years of rebuilding—is beyond God’s reach.

He does not waste the prayers offered in faith, the obedience shown in difficult places, or the seeds of His Word planted in a willing heart.

Perhaps you are facing news you never expected. Perhaps you are carrying a burden that has not lifted or waiting for an answer that has not come.

Jesus invites you to come to Him.

He gave His life for your sins, rose from the grave, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who turns from sin and places their faith in Him. Salvation cannot be earned through good works, giving, or religious effort. It is the gift of God, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Our International Prayer Center is ready to stand with you in prayer. Your partnership also helps share the hope of Jesus with families who need to know that God has not abandoned them.
