When a Nation Needs Divine Favor

Jim BuchanBy Jim Buchan•14 Minutes

What America’s history and the Bible teach us about seeking God’s favor through humility, repentance, prayer, and spiritual renewal.

What does it take for a nation to experience God’s favor? As America faces division, uncertainty, and challenges to its spiritual foundations, Scripture points us not to political power, but to an ancient biblical invitation to humility, repentance, and prayer. God’s favor is His gracious presence and blessing resting on a people who walk humbly before Him, and it begins with hearts that turn toward Him.

A Remarkable Message on America’s Great Seal

Have you ever looked closely at the back of a one-dollar bill?

Among its familiar symbols is a Latin phrase that carries a profound message: Annuit Coeptis.

These words appear above the unfinished pyramid on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, which has been printed on the back of the one-dollar bill since 1935. The phrase is generally translated as “He has favored our undertakings,” acknowledging the role of divine Providence in America’s founding.

When the Great Seal was adopted in 1782, its symbolism reflected the belief that America’s struggle for independence had benefited from God’s providential care. Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Continental Congress who presented the final design, explained that the Eye of Providence and the motto “allude to the many signal interpositions of providence in favour of the American cause.”

Think about that for a moment.

The men who helped establish our nation recognized something that every generation needs to remember: Human wisdom, strength, and determination are not enough. We need God’s favor.

That recognition is particularly meaningful when our nation’s future seems uncertain, because trusting God in uncertain times is where faith becomes real. But what exactly is divine favor? And how should we seek it?

What Does the Bible Say About God’s Favor?

One of the most beautiful prayers for God’s favor comes from Psalm 90, a psalm attributed to Moses:

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” (Psalm 90:17 ESV).

Notice what Moses is asking.

He is not simply praying for success. He is asking God to establish what His people are doing, giving their efforts lasting significance according to His purposes.

God’s favor is more than material prosperity, political influence, or national security. It is His gracious presence and blessing, enabling us to fulfill His purposes. That distinction is important. Walking in God’s favor means living in step with His purposes, whatever our circumstances may be.

We should never assume that prosperity automatically proves God’s approval, or that hardship necessarily means He has withdrawn His favor. The ultimate measure of God’s blessing is not how powerful or wealthy a nation becomes. It is whether its people are walking in truth, righteousness, justice, and humility before Him.

Proverbs 14:34 declares:

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (ESV).

This timeless principle reminds us that the spiritual and moral character of a people matters deeply to God.

Abraham Lincoln’s Call for National Repentance

During one of the darkest periods in American history, President Abraham Lincoln recognized the nation’s need for God’s mercy. The Civil War had divided the country and brought unimaginable suffering. Americans were confronting the terrible consequences of slavery, division, and armed conflict.

On March 30, 1863, Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for a national day of humiliation, fasting, and prayer. In that remarkable document, he acknowledged the nation’s tendency toward pride and self-sufficiency: “But we have forgotten God.”

Lincoln warned that prosperity had made Americans increasingly confident in their own achievements while neglecting their dependence on divine grace. In his words, the nation had become “too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!”

His response was not merely to call for better political leadership or more effective national policies. He called the people to humble themselves, confess their sins, and seek God’s forgiveness.

More than 160 years later, that message still challenges us.

We certainly need wise leaders and just laws. But neither political power nor government policy can accomplish the inner transformation that only God can bring to the human heart.

A nation cannot legislate its way into spiritual revival. Spiritual awakening begins when people turn their hearts toward God.

Can God Heal a Divided Nation?

Perhaps the most familiar biblical passage concerning national repentance is 2 Chronicles 7:14:

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (ESV).

These words were spoken to Solomon after the dedication of the temple, in the context of God’s covenant with Israel.

While we should be careful not to treat them as an unconditional promise that God will restore any modern nation to prosperity if enough people pray, the passage reveals enduring truths about God’s character and the response He desires from His people.

He calls us to humility rather than pride, repentance rather than self-justification, and prayer rather than self-reliance.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God welcomes those who sincerely turn to Him.

The people of Nineveh provide a striking example. When Jonah proclaimed God’s coming judgment, the people responded with fasting, humility, and repentance. God saw their response and withheld the announced judgment (Jonah 3:5–10).

Their story reminds us that no nation should presume upon God’s mercy, but neither should we underestimate His willingness to show compassion.

Revival Begins With You and Me

It’s easy to look at the condition of our country and blame political leaders, cultural institutions, or people who disagree with us. But before we ask God to change Washington, our neighbors, or the direction of our society, perhaps we should ask Him to examine our own hearts.

Are we demonstrating the love of Christ to those who disagree with us?

Are we living with integrity when no one is watching?

Are we showing compassion to the hurting, defending the vulnerable, and pursuing justice and mercy?

Are we praying faithfully for our leaders, regardless of their political affiliation?

The apostle Paul instructs believers to offer prayers and intercessions for those in authority so that we may live peaceful and godly lives (1 Timothy 2:1–2). Jesus goes even further, commanding us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44).

These aren’t merely suggestions for difficult times. They are expressions of the transformed life Christ calls us to live, even when the foundations of our lives seem shaken.

Before revival changes the direction of a nation, it must change the direction of individual hearts. Imagine what could happen if millions of believers began demonstrating the character of Christ more consistently in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities.

We might not agree on every political issue, but we can agree that America desperately needs people who reflect God’s righteousness, mercy, and love.

A Prayer for God’s Favor on America

When we encounter the words Annuit Coeptis on our currency, let them remind us of something far greater than our nation’s history. Let them remind us of our continuing dependence upon God.

Our prayer should not simply be that God would bless everything America chooses to do. It should be that our nation would increasingly pursue what is right in His sight. That is a far more meaningful expression of divine favor.

Perhaps today is the right time to make the prayer of Moses our own:

Lord, let Your favor rest upon us. Establish the work of our hands. Forgive our sins, heal our divisions, and awaken our hearts to Your truth. Give our leaders wisdom, teach us to walk in humility, and help us reflect the righteousness and compassion of Jesus Christ.

May Your people be faithful witnesses in a nation that desperately needs Your grace. May everything we do bring honor and glory to Your name. Amen.

America’s greatest need is not simply a change in circumstances. It is a renewed recognition of our dependence upon God.

That renewal can begin with you and me.

How can I pray for leaders I disagree with?

Start by praying for them by name, as 1 Timothy 2:1–2 instructs, asking God to give them wisdom, integrity, and a heart for justice. Pray for their families and their protection. Then ask God to guard your own heart from bitterness, remembering that Jesus calls us to love even those we strongly oppose (Matthew 5:44). Praying this way doesn’t mean endorsing every decision. It means trusting God with the outcome.
