How to Walk in God’s Favor and Blessing

There is something wonderful about knowing you belong to God.

Through Jesus Christ, you have been brought into relationship with your Heavenly Father. You don’t have to earn His love or persuade Him to care about you. You are His child. He invites you to trust Him, walk with Him, and experience the goodness of His presence in every area of your life.

The Bible calls this favor.

God’s favor doesn’t mean you will never experience difficulties. It doesn’t guarantee that every prayer will be answered exactly when or how you expect. What it does mean is that God is for you, His presence goes with you, and you can trust Him to work in your life according to His purposes.

And Scripture reveals an important truth: How we respond to God matters.

Two Ways to Live

The Feast of Tabernacles was a joyful season when God’s people celebrated His provision and remembered His faithfulness. After gathering their harvest, they looked back with gratitude—and forward with expectation.

It was a reminder that their ultimate source was not the harvest. God was their Source.

That is still an important lesson for us today. The world tells you that everything depends upon you—your ability, your resources, your connections, and your circumstances.

God invites you into a different way of living. He calls you to trust Him.

Jesus said:

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over …” (Luke 6:38 ESV).

And Proverbs 11:24–25 describes a surprising Kingdom principle: generosity leads to increase, while desperately clinging to everything we possess can actually leave us impoverished.

This is part of the biblical principle of seedtime and harvest. What we sow matters.

Scripture applies this principle to our finances and generosity, but it reaches into many other areas of our lives as well.

• You sow with your words.
• You sow through acts of kindness.
• You sow forgiveness.
• You sow your time.
• You sow obedience.
• You sow generosity.

Most importantly, you sow faith whenever you choose to trust God and His Word.

Obedience Is a Response to Grace

Malachi 3 contains one of Scripture’s clearest teachings about trusting God with our resources. The Lord challenged His people to bring their tithes faithfully and then said:

“‘Put me to the test,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need’” (Malachi 3:10 ESV).

This passage is teaching us to trust God enough to obey Him.

Our salvation is entirely the gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. We cannot earn His love, forgiveness, or eternal life. Yet once we belong to Him, He calls us to live differently.

Obedience becomes our response to grace. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15 ESV). We choose to obey because we trust the One who is leading us.

That includes trusting Him with our finances. Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to generosity; not because He needs what we possess, but because giving expresses faith, breaks the grip of selfishness, and provides resources for His purposes in the earth.

When we give to advance God’s Kingdom, our financial seed becomes part of something much larger than ourselves. It helps the Gospel reach someone who has never heard about Jesus, strengthens a believer who needs encouragement, and makes it possible for another person to be discipled and grow in their faith.

We may never meet those people in this life, but God sees every seed and knows every life it touches. One day, we’ll rejoice in Heaven as we see what we cannot see this side of eternity.

Which Way Will You Choose?

The prophet Elijah confronted this very issue on Mount Carmel. The Israelites had become divided in their loyalty. They worshipped God, but they also worshipped Baal. So, Elijah challenged them:

“How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him” (1 Kings 18:21 ESV).

Eventually, God dramatically demonstrated His power by sending fire from Heaven.

Elijah’s challenge still speaks to us: If the Lord is God, follow Him.

There comes a point when faith requires a decision.

• Will you trust what you see—or what God has said?
• Will you hold tightly to what you have—or trust God enough to be generous?
• Will you carry an offense—or plant a seed of forgiveness?
• Will you continue doing things your own way—or surrender your plans to Him?

God’s favor is the beautiful result of walking closely with the One who loves you and knows what is best for your life.

What Seed Is God Asking You to Sow?

Throughout Scripture, God asked people to take steps of faith.

• Naaman dipped seven times in the Jordan River.
• Peter stepped out of the boat.
• A woman reached through a crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment.
• A widow placed her offering in the Temple treasury.
• A little boy placed five loaves and two fish into Jesus’ hands.

Again and again, faith became visible through action. James tells us that “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17 ESV).

So what might faith look like in your life today?

• Perhaps God is asking you to forgive someone.
• Maybe He is calling you to spend more time in His presence.
• Maybe He is calling you to sow a financial seed into His Kingdom work.
• Perhaps you need to obey something He has already shown you in His Word.
• Maybe He is prompting you to encourage someone, serve someone, give generously, or take a step you have been afraid to take.

Whatever it is, don’t underestimate what God can do with one act of obedient faith.

Seedtime and harvest is not a formula for demanding something from God. We don’t give Him an offering and dictate what He must give us in return. We sow because we trust Him. We believe His promises, obey His leading, and leave the harvest in His sovereign hands.

That is faith!

Expect God’s Goodness

The Feast of Tabernacles reminds us that God has always desired to dwell among His people. For Israel, His presence accompanied them through the wilderness.

Today, because of Jesus, God’s Holy Spirit dwells within every believer. You are not walking through life alone.

So instead of chasing after God’s blessings, chase after God Himself. Seek His presence. Trust His Word. Listen for His voice. Follow where He leads.

And as you do, you can confidently pray with the psalmist:

“For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield” (Psalm 5:12 ESV).

God knows where you are today. He knows what you need. He sees the harvest you’ve been waiting for and every seed of faithfulness you have sown.

Keep trusting. Keep obeying. Keep sowing good seeds.

And expect the goodness and favor of God to follow you as you walk closely with Him.
