King Solomon’s Economy: 6 Timeless Money Principles from Proverbs

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries4 Minutes

How do you build a life of financial peace in a world driven by anxiety, inflation, and uncertainty? While today’s money advice often changes with the markets, God’s wisdom never does. King Solomon—renowned for his wisdom—left us a legacy far more valuable than gold: biblical truths about wealth, work, and worship. In this article, you’ll explore six powerful truths about money from Solomon’s economy. These timeless principles will help you steward your resources with peace, purpose, and trust in God’s provision.

By today’s standards, Solomon would be wealthier than the richest billionaires. But his greatest asset wasn’t gold—it was wisdom.

When he could have asked God for anything, he chose an “understanding heart” so he could “discern between good and evil” (1 Kings 3:7-9). That choice pleased the Lord—and reveals what truly matters!

6 Biblical Money Principles from Solomon’s Wisdom

These timeless principles from King Solomon’s economy can still be applied to your finances today:

  1. Work Is a Blessing, Not a Burden
“He who tills his land will have plenty of food, but he who follows empty pursuits will have poverty in plenty” (Proverbs 28:19).
If you are not able to work, the Lord has still promised to be your provision.
  2. Avoid the Trap of Laziness
“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, then your poverty will come as a robber and your want like an armed man” (Proverbs 24:33-34).
  3. Save, Don’t Squander
“There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it” (Proverbs 21:20).
  4. Be Honest in All Financial Dealings
“Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, but the one who gathers by labor increases it” (Proverbs 13:11).
  5. Remember: Wealth Is Temporary
“Know well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds; for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure all generations” (Proverbs 27:23-24).
  6. Honor God First
“Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10).

How Many Do You Practice?

With an ever-changing economy, it can sometimes seem difficult to adhere to Solomon’s wisdom in every situation. Sometimes you’re in-between jobs and unable to work. Sometimes your body is weary and you need more rest than usual.

But the one truth that should never be ignored is to “honor the Lord from your wealth.” Mind you, this passage does not refer only to the wealthy (as defined by today’s standards); it applies to each of us, regardless of how our income or material worth is defined.

Even in a changing world, God’s financial principles remain true. Whether you’re in a season of plenty or in need, honoring God with what you have—great or small—is a pathway to peace, provision, and purpose.

Reflection Question:

Which of these six principles is God highlighting for you today? Ask Him to show you how to apply His wisdom to your current season.
