The Love of a Mother

Many of us have witnessed the love God has for us. We’ve seen it mirrored in the eyes of a mother. We can see it as she gazes on her newborn for the first time. It’s there as she nurtures a sick child. And when she chooses a hug and forgiveness, when punishment was deserved. The love God puts into a mother’s heart is sacrificial and unconditional.

In John 19:25-27, as Jesus hung on the cross, among his last thoughts were those of His mother. It must have been heart wrenching for Jesus to see the pain in His mother’s eyes. The same eyes that had shown him love of nurture.

When He saw her and a disciple he loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son!” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that moment on the disciple cared for her as his own, and after Jesus’ death took her into his home.

We might be tempted to think it remarkable that this was one of his final acts on earth. But then when you consider how strikingly similar a mother’s love is to the love God has for us, we begin to understand.

A mother sees past our faults and sees our heart. Just as God sees us.

On this Mothering Sunday, I pray that God will bless you if you are a mother – and also that He will pour out His love upon the mothers in your life.

God bless you,
