How to Slow Down at Christmas

A Cup of Christmas: How to Create the Christmas You Want

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries6 Minutes

If you’ve ever wondered how to slow down at Christmas when life feels anything but quiet, you’re not alone. In the middle of the lists, the pressure, and the noise, God is inviting you into a different kind of December—one filled with peace, intention, and room for Him. Join Kim Crabill as she shows you how.

Christmas arrives quickly, doesn’t it? One moment we’re packing away fall decorations. The next, the world erupts into lights, lists, deadlines, and expectations we never quite feel ready for. December has a way of magnifying everything—our joys, yes, but also our exhaustion, our unfinished plans, and (for some of us) that quiet ache for a season that feels meaningful instead of rushed.

If you’ve ever wished you knew how to slow down at Christmas—really slow down—you’re not alone.

That’s why Kim Crabill invites us to something different.

Instead of tumbling into December on autopilot, she asks us to pause, breathe, and join her for what she calls A Cup of Christmas. Maybe you think you don’t have time to pause. But if you start with just a few calm moments with God and a warm drink in hand, you’ll find space for your soul to settle.

And that’s something we all need this time of year!

Start by Choosing the Christmas You Want

Kim begins this journey with an honest admission: Most of us enter December with guilt already chasing us. All the things we didn’t finish this year now mix with the new stack of holiday demands—school programs, office gatherings, gift lists, travel plans, memories we’re trying to recreate, expectations we’re trying to meet.

But what if this year could be different? What does it take to move in a new direction?

Kim points us to Philippians 3:13, where Paul encourages us to forget what is behind—not erase it, but refuse to be held back by it. She asks:

What if we let go of what weighed us down…and looked ahead with holy anticipation?

That’s the heart of how to slow down and create the Christmas you want. It begins with a vision—a picture of what you long for this season to be:

  • Peace instead of pressure
  • Presence instead of perfection
  • Wonder instead of weariness
  • Moments that feel like worship instead of obligations

This is not wishful thinking. It’s spiritual intention.

And it starts with giving yourself the gift of time with God—even just a few minutes each day.

Say Yes by Saying No

In another reflection, Kim turns our attention to one of the most liberating truths of the season: Not everything deserves your “yes.”

She uses Daniel 1:8 as an example—Daniel “purposed in his heart” not to be swayed. He decided early what mattered most, and that conviction shaped every other decision he made.

Kim encourages us to do the same:

  1. Decide what you want your Christmas to mean.
  2. Look at your calendar and identify what supports that—and what steals it.
  3. Practice saying no to what drains your peace, so you can say yes to what brings life.

This isn’t about withdrawing from people. It’s about staying true to the Christmas God is inviting you into—one filled with joy, meaning, and room for Him.

Make Space for God to Meet You

Kim Crabill believes—and has seen again and again—that when we create space for God, He fills it. Her invitation is simple:

  • Take a few minutes each day.
  • Sit with her.
  • Sit with God.
  • Let your heart breathe.

That’s what A Cup of Christmas offers on the Spiritual Growth Hub:

  • Gentle devotionals
  • Short prayers
  • Daily reminders that Jesus came near—to bring peace into real lives and real struggles

If December already feels heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone. Let God meet you in the quiet. Let Him reorder your priorities. And let Him reshape your Christmas from the inside out.

A Christmas Blessing

May the God who came near in a quiet Bethlehem night come near to you this Christmas—calming your mind, steadying your heart, and filling your days with His peace.

May you find room to breathe, room to rest, and room to wonder again.

And may this be the year you experience the Christmas you truly want…
because you walked through it with Him. Amen.
