Thankful for Family Traditions

Thankful for Family Traditions

John FarrellBy John Farrell6 Minutes

Being thankful for family traditions helps us recognize the ways God blesses us through shared experiences, cherished memories, and generational faith. This Thanksgiving reflection reminds us that family traditions not only bring us joy but also point us back to God’s goodness and mercy.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever (1 Chronicles 16:34 NKJV).

When we pause to be thankful for family traditions, we’re reminded that gratitude is not just about food on the table or places we travel—it’s about the people God has placed in our lives and the faith He calls us to live out together.

My family is not originally from North Carolina. My family moved here from California two years before I was born, leaving everyone they knew and loved behind. With nearly 2,500 miles separating us from grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, holidays often looked different for us. Traveling cross-country with four kids usually only happened for special occasions like weddings, 50th anniversaries, or funerals.

On a few precious occasions, we celebrated Christmas in California, and those memories are highlights of my childhood. But for Thanksgiving, my parents made a different decision: we would start our own family tradition.

How Thanksgiving Traditions Strengthen Families

While others gathered with extended relatives, our family packed up and headed out of town. Most years, it was to the beach; sometimes to the mountains. When Hurricane Hugo closed the beaches in 1989, we headed for higher ground. Wherever we went, the focus was never the location—it was being together.

Our Thanksgiving vacations included simple but meaningful traditions:

  • Walking on the beach.
  • Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade followed by the National Dog Show and football games.
  • Playing board games and card games, each with plenty of laughter.
  • Shopping trips to the local malls.
  • And, of course, feasting on a delicious Thanksgiving meal.

These rhythms shaped our lives and became traditions that now include spouses, grandchildren, and friends over the years who have got to experience all the craziness that comes with my “family Thanksgiving.” Family traditions anchor us, give us belonging, and pass down faith and gratitude to future generations.

Creating Lasting Memories Through Family Traditions

The Thanksgiving tradition that began in the early 1980s continues to this day, even though life has changed. With my father’s passing, holidays look different. With children in college, family members with uncertain schedules, and new challenges each year, not everyone can make it every year. Yet those who gather carry the tradition forward, building new memories while remembering those who are absent.

Being thankful for family traditions doesn’t mean everything is perfect—it means we treasure the time we do have and honor the people God has given us. Even in seasons of loss or change, gratitude allows us to see God’s hand at work.

Why We Should Always Be Thankful for Family Traditions

This Thanksgiving, I am especially thankful for my family and the Thanksgiving traditions we’ve created. I’m also grateful for our health, friends, and the experiences that have made us stronger. Most importantly, I’m grateful for God’s ultimate sacrifice, His presence in my life, and the beautiful world He created for us to enjoy.

Traditions may change with time, but God’s mercy never changes. When we give thanks for family traditions, we are really giving thanks to the Lord who gave them to us.

As you sit down at your Thanksgiving table, look around at those God has placed in your life. Be thankful for their presence, for the roles they play in your life, and for the traditions you are building together. These are blessings worth celebrating every day—not just on Thanksgiving.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 NKJV).

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Heavenly Father, we give You thanks for the gift of family and the traditions that draw us closer together. Thank You for memories that anchor us, for blessings seen and unseen, and for Your presence that never leaves us. As Psalm 107:1 declares, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forver.” May our hearts always be filled with gratitude to You, the giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

Happy Thanksgiving and God bless!

This Thanksgiving, take time to thank God for the family traditions He has given you. Celebrate His blessings, cherish your loved ones, and sow a seed of gratitude that will bless future generations.
