Mentoring Kids’ Faith in a Screen-Obsessed World: 5 Tips That Work

Lisa HollowayBy Lisa Holloway6 Minutes

Raising kids in a screen-obsessed world isn’t easy—especially when so much digital media undermines your values. But you’re not powerless. In this article, you’ll explore why early faith formation matters and what the research says about media’s impact. You’ll also learn five practical ways you can mentor your child’s faith—even in the middle of the digital storm.

The Battle for Their Hearts and Minds Starts Early

You want your child to grow up strong in faith and character—but in today’s media-saturated world, that feels harder than ever. The truth is, your child’s worldview is being shaped by every show they watch, every voice they listen to, and every screen they scroll.

Most parents sense something is off, but few know what to do about it. According to Pew Research, over 71% of U.S. parents are concerned about screen time and what they might see online. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry recommends limiting preschoolers to one hour of screen time per day, but many kids far exceed that.

The problem isn’t just screen time, though. It’s what they’re learning while they’re there—and how early it begins.

What the Research Says

Barna research reveals that:

  • 50% of individuals come to faith in Christ before age 12
  • Over half of them make this decision before the age of 9
  • A child’s worldview starts forming around 15-18 months
  • By age 13, it’s nearly fully formed

That means your window of influence is both sacred—and short.

Who’s Shaping Your Children’s Worldview?

Most kids today will spend far more hours with digital content than they will in church or other faith-based activities. The statistics are sobering, but they underscore the importance of mentoring your child well in the digital age.

If we’re not actively guiding what shapes their hearts and minds … someone else will.

Luke 6:45 reminds us:

“Good people have good things saved in their hearts. That’s why they say good things … What people say with their mouths comes from what fills their hearts.”

As parents and mentors, we have to ask: What’s filling their hearts?

The good news? You don’t have to be perfect—just present and intentional.

Let’s explore five practical, grace-filled ways you can help your child grow a resilient, Christ-centered faith—right where you are.

5 Practical Ways to Mentor Kids’ Faith in a Digital World

A living faith and biblical outlook doesn’t happen by chance. Mentoring kids’ faith in the digital world requires practical strategies:

  1. Set boundaries around screen time—and offer real alternative.
Reading, playing, exploring the outdoors, or even helping with simple chores can provide healthy balance. It doesn’t have to be fancy. What matters most is being together.
  2. Be choosy about what they watch.
Parental controls are helpful, but not enough. Kids need content that doesn’t just avoid harm—but also builds faith, sparks joy, and aligns with godly values.
  3. Sample their media with them.
Get familiar with the shows they love—then use that as a springboard for conversation. You may be surprised by what’s embedded in so-called “kids” content. Watching together shows your child you care. It also opens the door for truth-filled dialogue.
  4. Make faith part of everyday conversation.
Whether it’s reacting to a show or navigating a challenge, use real-life moments to talk about what it means to follow Jesus. For instance, talk through what characters did in shows and what a Christ-like response could look like. Invite your kids into age-appropriate conversations about right, wrong, and grace.
  5. Reinforce identity in Christ.
Help your child internalize what God says about them. Pick a Bible verse as their verse—something they can return to when media or peers send harmful messages. Let God’s Word be louder than the world.

All too often, secular media promotes an unbiblical or actively anti-Christian worldview—but it’s not the only voice that gets to speak. With a few intentional steps, you can help your kids grow into light-filled, resilient followers of Jesus.

Together, we can raise kids who know who they are, Whose they are, and how to shine God’s love in a world that desperately needs it.
