Renew Your Mind: Replacing Lies with God’s Truth

Lisa HollowayBy Lisa Holloway10 Minutes

What you believe shapes how you live—and many of us are living according to lies we’ve unknowingly embraced. This article explores how to renew your mind with God’s truth, replacing distorted thinking with His promises so you can live in true freedom and purpose.

There’s a whiteboard on my office wall filled with praise verses. Why? Because your thoughts shape your life.

When I’m in the middle of a conflict—or when the outcome seems uncertain—I tend to get swept up in what I see. I stop focusing on God and start wrestling with circumstances in my own strength. In those moments, I need to refocus on God. The whiteboard helps me do that.

Because the truth is: Whatever you feed your mind today will show up in your choices tomorrow. Whatever you fix your eyes on will steer the direction of your life.

To live in the freedom God intends for you, you have to renew your mind with His Word on a regular basis:

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2 NLT).

Think about it: Have you ever believed something deep down, even though you knew it wasn’t true? Lies like:

  • “I’m not good enough.”
  • “I just can’t win.”
  • “God won’t use someone like me.”

These internal lies shape how we live … until we learn to replace them with God’s truth.

Renew Your Mind Daily: What You Feed Grows

So where do these lies come from? If our lives follow the direction of our thoughts, then what we fill our minds with matters:

  • What we think about
  • What we watch
  • Stuff we listen to

It all shapes us—either toward God’s truth or away from it. The apostle Paul had this to say about the strongholds of our minds:

“Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds … bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

The battle for your mind is real. And it starts with what you allow in.

How the Enemy Twists the Truth

From the very beginning, the enemy didn’t lie outright—he distorted the truth. Take a look at Genesis 3:1, where he asked Eve:

“Did God really say you must not eat the fruit of any of the trees in the garden?”

Of course, God had never said that. In fact, He gave them all of the trees—except for the one that would harm them. But Satan’s twist cast doubt on God’s character.

He didn’t tempt Eve with blatant rebellion. Instead, he nudged her toward choosing what seemed good in the moment—while doubting God’s goodness. That same distortion plays out in every generation. We start chasing whatever looks good to us. Then when things fall apart, we blame God for the mess.

How Lies Get In—and Why They Stick

As C.S. Lewis once wrote:

“We are all trying to let our mind and heart go their own way … and hoping, in spite of this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly. And that is exactly what Christ warned us you could not do.”

So why do the lies take root and stay? These are a few of the reasons:

  • They’re tied to real experiences: “I was abandoned, so I must be unlovable.”
  • They’re connected to strong emotions, like fear, shame, or rejection.
  • It’s what “everyone” else is doing or thinks.
  • Pride or fear keep them hidden: “If people knew who I really am …”
  • Unhealed wounds distort your view of God, yourself, and others.

Replace the Lies with Truth

Let’s get personal. Christian author Henri Nouwen identified five common identity lies:

  • You are what you have.
  • You are what you do.
  • What other people say or think about you defines you.
  • You’re nothing more than your worst moment
  • You’re only as good as your best moment.

These are more than just psychological hang-ups. They’re formidable strongholds of the mind. There’s a long, long list of the different kinds of lies that get a hold on people. But God’s truth tells a better story.

Lies vs. Truth Exchange: Renew Your Mind with God’s Word

As Kristen Smeltzer once shared:

“It is a facet of God’s character to see people in light of who they will become.”

Unfortunately, we often see ourselves through the lens of our past or present – or all the ways we feel we’re not enough. But what if you started seeing yourself the way God sees you?

Are you ready to exchange those lies for truth?

The Lie: I have to earn love.
God’s Truth: God loves you fully and freely.
Scripture: Romans 5:8

The Lie: If I’m not perfect, I’ll be rejected.
God’s Truth: God chose you knowing your flaws. His love isn’t performance-based.
Scripture: Colossians 3:12

The Lie: It’s too late for me.
God’s Truth: God restores, redeems, and makes all things new.
Scripture: Joel 2:25

The Lie: I have to be successful to matter.
God’s Truth: Your value comes from who you are in Christ – not what you achieve.
Scripture: Ephesians 2:10

The Lie: No one sees me.
God’s Truth: God sees you and knows you completely.
Scripture: Psalm 139:1-4

4 Simple Steps to Start Replacing Lies with Truth

When you align your thinking with God’s voice, you silence every other lie. Try these four simple steps to begin:

  1. Ask God to reveal any thoughts that don’t align with His Word.
  2. Read God’s Word aloud. Speak truth over those lies.
  3. Be still with God, even for a couple of minutes, and wait for His leading.
  4. Write down one truth and keep it visible. Put it on your mirror or in your phone—wherever you’ll see it daily.

God’s truth doesn’t just heal your past—it rewrites your future.

As Jesus said,

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

All Creation Is Waiting for You to Be Free

Taking in God’s truth doesn’t just change your thinking—it realigns your life with God’s heart.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11 ESV).

When your thoughts align with God’s, your life begins to reflect the freedom He already won for you. You begin to thrive and live with purpose—regardless of circumstances.

You don’t have to carry shame, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or fear. God knows exactly who He made you to be—and He wants to lead you there.

“All creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who His children really are” (Romans 8:19 NLT).

When you walk in truth and freedom, you reflect Jesus. Your renewed mind doesn’t just transform your life: It ripples outward and changes the atmosphere around you.

This is what it means to live transformed—to renew your mind and step into the abundant life God has for you.
