How do you tell good advice from God’s direction? Jethro’s counsel to Moses sounded wise, but Scripture quietly reminds us that even sensible wisdom should be tested against the Lord.

“Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said” (Exodus 18:24).

Jethro’s advice made sense to Moses. He had observed Moses’ busy life and saw how he judged the people “from morning till evening” (v. 14). Jethro felt that if he continued at this pace, Moses would certainly wear himself out (v. 18). He recommended that Moses ask others to do most of the judging, and Moses agreed and implemented this plan.

But as we look deeper, we realize that Moses never seemed to consult with God about this. He appears to have forgotten that, as he told Jethro earlier, he was God’s servant, fulfilling the role God had given him. We also need to bear in mind that Jethro was a “priest of Midian” (v. 1), but it’s very possible that his plan was not initiated or approved by the Lord.

Shortly after Jethro’s visit, Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Law. While there, the people revolted against his leadership and made a golden calf to which they brought offerings. Had Jethro’s plan contributed to this revolt?

Much later, God did allow for the sharing of responsibilities so Moses would not bear the burdens (Numbers 11:16–17). But this was God’s plan, given at His time and in His way.

How tempting it can be to follow the world’s wisdom. Instead, we must remember that we are servants of God. He is our ultimate authority. Instead of heeding worldly advice, we must live according to His Word.
