When Praise Rises Without Restraint

Scripture and church history remind us that when praise rises without restraint, God is delighted and the sounds of Heaven are reflected.

“Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the LORD; exult before him!” (Psalm 68:4).

Born in 339 AD, Saint Ambrose became one of the most important church leaders of the fourth century. Bishop of Milan from 374 to 397, he was noted for his passion for preaching and studying the Word of God.

Ambrose also stressed the importance of worship—particularly the importance of music and congregational singing. He wrote many hymns, some of which are still sung.

Historian Paul Johnson said that Ambrose felt it was important for believers to learn to sing loudly! Johnson writes how Ambrose “thought the volume frightened the devil, while the harmonics and the beauty of the melodic line were pleasing to God.” Ambrose once wrote, “From the singing of men, women, virgins, and children, there is a harmonious volume of sound, like the waves of the ocean.”

Ambrose echoed a central theme taught throughout the Bible. Yes, there are times for quiet singing and silent meditation. But we also are commanded to “sing loud praises to him who rides the clouds” (NLT). The Bible describes Heaven as a place where the praise is loud. In his vision, John “heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder” (Revelation 14:2).

Don’t hold back or be intimidated. Express your praise passionately to God. Think of all He’s done for you. Sing to His name. Shout with a voice of triumph!
