When Hasty Conclusions Replace Careful Listening

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When hasty conclusions replace careful listening, Job 18 warns how quick accusations can wound the innocent and misrepresent God, urging us to walk in humility, compassion, and patient discernment.

“Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: ‘How long will you hunt for words? Consider, and then we will speak’” (Job 18:1–2).

One of Job’s friends, Bildad, accused him of manipulating words in order to defend himself. Bildad continued on to imply that Job’s problems were caused by personal wickedness.

In response, Job declared that Bildad and his friends had been tormenting and crushing him “with words.” Instead of listening or trying to understand what was happening, they “cast reproach upon” him and were “not ashamed to wrong” him (Job 19:2–3).

By reading the entire book of Job, we learn that, contrary to Bildad’s accusations, Job was not wicked. In fact, God called him “a blameless and upright man” (Job 1:8).

Amid his tests and trials, he had a firsthand encounter with God, admitting that the Lord “can do all things, and that no purpose of [His] can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). He responded with complete humility: I “repent in dust and ashes” (42:6). Job was honest with God, and God restored his fortunes and “gave Job twice as much as he had before” (42:10).

But God had nothing good to say about Bildad. He and his two friends had jumped to conclusions, not only about Job, but also about God.

Don’t assume that you have a perfect understanding of the Lord or His purposes. Humble yourself before Him. Seek His wisdom. Ask Him to make you a person of compassion and mercy, filled with His love, and always listening – “be quick to hear, slow to speak” (James 1:19).

Reflection Question: Are you quick to judge—or quick to listen?

Prayer
Father, give me a spirit of compassion. Help me to guard my words and be a better listener. May I reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
