Walking with Jesus

“As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.” Luke 24:15 NLT

It is a song without a known author. A song that many have never sung, or heard of. Few would list this as a favorite. It has not been the subject of exhaustive scholarly studies.

But this spiritual has a message that cuts deep. That comes from the heart, and penetrates into our very being. This song is “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me.” Every word is rich with emotion, with the cries of a heart desperate for the Savior. Written by an African-American who was going through difficult times, longing for the presence of Jesus.

He sang how much he wanted Jesus to walk with him “all along my pilgrim journey.” He wanted Jesus to walk with him in his trials and “when my heart is almost breaking.” When he was “in trouble,” “when my head is bowed in sorrow,” and “when my burden gets too heavy.”

This unknown writer knew that he needed Jesus, and that he could depend on Him. There is something particularly important about knowing Jesus walks with us. He knows that we are on a journey through life. That we will have many kinds of encounters along the way. But we can know He always is with us, by our side.

Two of Jesus’ disciples had that experience as they journeyed toward the village of Emmaus. As they walked, Jesus joined them. They shared their concerns and burdens with Him, discussing their questions and problems, without ever knowing that this was Jesus.

But after He departed, they realized how, in His presence, everything had been different. They observed, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” (v. 32).

Whatever you face, make this a day to seek Jesus. Walk with Him. Talk with Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that You are with me in every situation I face. Thank You for walking with me. Thank You for Your peace and comfort. I love You. In Your name. Amen.
