The Strength to Outsit the Storm

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When we gain the strength to outsit the storm, Ecclesiastes 7 shows that patient endurance and Spirit-shaped self-control accomplish more than pride or hurried decisions ever could.

“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit” (Ecclesiastes 7:8).

In his years as American Vice President (1953–1961), Richard Nixon had frequent opportunities to interact with Konrad Adenauer. Born in 1876, Adenauer was elected chancellor of West Germany in 1949. He served until 1963 when he was 87 years old.

In particular, Nixon was amazed at Adenauer’s patience. He “seemed tireless,” even into his eighties. He once said that the best politician is the one who “can outsit the rest.” If necessary, he would “let meetings run far into the night.” And, Nixon observed, “He would sit patiently as one sleepy opponent after another came around to his point of view.” His negotiations frequently were successful simply because of his patience—his ability to wait and persevere.

In contrast to Adenauer, many people seem impetuous and impatient, anxious, and in a hurry. By rushing, they often make wrong decisions. The Bible tells us that it is “better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city” (Proverbs 16:32 NLT).

Patience is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22), a byproduct of yielding to His control in our lives. It comes to those who truly trust that God is in control and allow Him to take away their fears and worries.

David wrote, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14). Don’t be anxious or give up hope. Wait patiently, and you will succeed.

Reflection Question: How will you wait on the Lord?
