The Price of Compromise

Some Israelites had taken possession of their inheritance and driven out natives in the land. But some from the tribe of Ephraim fell short. They gained control over the city of Gezer but failed to drive out the Canaanites who lived there. These Canaanites became forced laborers but still exercised influence. It seemed like an acceptable compromise, but generations to come would pay a price.

This town, located northwest of Jerusalem, eventually came under the influence of the Philistines. Then David had to fight a battle to regain control (2 Samuel 5:25).

Gezer then became a focus for Solomon after it was captured by Egypt. Unlike the Israelites, these Egyptians would not tolerate Canaanite influence and killed all who lived in the city. Then, Pharaoh gave Gezer “as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.” Thus, Gezer passed back into Israel’s sphere of influence. And Solomon rebuilt it (1 Kings 9:15-17).

The Israelites living in Gezer continued to remain vulnerable. Why? Because they failed to obey God completely and accepted a compromise.

As we look at the world, we may feel like those people from Ephraim – compromise isn’t so bad, and we don’t need to obey God fully. But when our lives are characterized by partial obedience, we never experience the fullness of His blessing. We always remain vulnerable and pay a price.

Make a commitment to obey God. Make Jesus the Lord over every area of your life. Don’t tolerate compromise.
