Mighty Warriors in God’s Services

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

First Chronicles 12 portrays mighty warriors in God’s service who are trained, alert, and fully prepared, calling believers to cultivate spiritual readiness through His Word, prayer, and obedience to His leading.

“From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains” (1 Chronicles 12:8).

Like many men in David’s army, the Gadites who joined him in the wilderness were called “mighty.” What exactly did they do to earn this description?

First, they were “experienced warriors.” They knew how to fight and were prepared for battle. Second, they were experts both in defensive and offensive warfare.

Third, they were alert and focused, with a determination that could be seen in their countenance. They were confident and able to concentrate. Fourth, they could move with speed and react quickly. They were always ready to respond to their commanders.

These are the same characteristics of the ideal spiritual warrior. If you want to be a mighty warrior in God’s army, seek to follow the example of these Gadites.

Make sure that you’re trained and ready. Know the Word of God. Maintain a vibrant prayer life and a close personal relationship with God, your Commander-in-Chief. Be ready to defend yourself against the attacks of the enemy and ready to go on the attack (Ephesians 6:10–20). Remain alert, determined, and focused. Don’t allow anything or anyone to distract you, but keep your eyes on the goals God has given you.

When you face opposition or problems, don’t be discouraged. Stay confident, and be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Be ready to respond quickly and obey whenever He speaks.

Reflection Question: How am I training myself to be ready for spiritual battle?

Prayer
Lord God, make me a faithful warrior in Your army. Help me to be armed and ready for battle. I await Your instructions. In Jesus’ name, amen.
