The Matchless Worth of Christ

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Isaiah 42 lifts our eyes to the matchless worth of Christ, the Servant who opens blind eyes and frees captives, stirring the same grateful worship that once transformed a wounded sailor into a faithful hymn writer.

“I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as … a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out … from the prison those who sit in darkness” (Isaiah 42:6–7).

Samuel Medley’s wounds were so severe that the surgeon said amputation was his only hope. He’d been wounded during a sea battle off Port Lagos in 1759. Born in Cheshunt, England in 1738, he was not a believer. Nonetheless, he prayed diligently, and when the surgeon examined him again, he said a miracle had taken place—the surgery was unnecessary!

Recuperating in his grandfather’s home, Medley continued in his sinful ways despite his miracle and his grandfather’s godly example. But when he heard Isaac Watts’ sermon based on Isaiah 42, Medley was convicted of his sins and committed his life to Christ.

He later entered the ministry, first pastoring a church in Watford, Hertfordshire, and then in Liverpool where his church was noted for its liveliness. Medley himself wrote more than 200 hymns. One of the most memorable, “Oh, Could I Speak the Matchless Worth,” told of his gratitude for what God had done for him.

How, he asked, could he “speak the matchless worth and sound the glories forth, which in my Savior shine”? All he could do was “sing His glorious righteousness, and magnify the wondrous grace which made salvation mine.”

Medley would sing about Jesus’ loving example and the “precious blood He spilt.” He expressed his longing to “see His face,” and be with “my Savior, Brother, Friend.”

Today, join with the saints of all ages. Sing praises to God! He is worthy!
