The Formula for Success

He had made mistakes, but overall, Joshua’s life defined success. He led his people into victory. Overcoming every obstacle, they took possession of the Promised Land. Every need was met. And God gave them victory “on every side” (v. 1). Joshua accomplished everything for which he had been called.

As he approached the end of his life, Joshua felt compelled to share his secret. How could others achieve this kind of success?

First, he stressed an unwavering commitment to God’s Word – to be “very determined” to put His Word into practice, not just know about it. Second, those wishing to be successful must realize that they would face temptations. Constantly they could be lured into traps and receive false promises. He warned that they must not compromise, but “cling to the Lord your God” (v. 8). This means developing a personal relationship with Him.

Joshua wanted people to realize that, with God on their side, “no man has stood against you” (v. 8). God even multiplied their efforts: “One of your men puts to flight a thousand,” for He “fights for you, just as He promised” (v. 10). They could be sure that He keeps His Word.

Do you want to be successful? Follow Joshua’s advice. Obey God and His Word. Do not compromise or follow the world around you. Seek an intimate relationship with Him. In every situation, trust Him.
