The Blessings of Tithing

“A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the LORD and must be set apart to him as holy . . .The LORD also owns every tenth animal counted off from your herds and flocks. They are set apart to him as holy.” -Leviticus 27:30-32 NLT

A recent study revealed that only 12% of born again Christians tithed. For many Believers, this seems shocking. They know that tithing is part of a lifestyle that leads to God’s blessings. It demonstrates that we have the right priorities. That He has first place in our lives. That we trust Him to supply all our needs.

There are many reasons why people don’t tithe. Some think that this is just an Old Testament concept. Some want to keep their money, hoarding out of fear and worry. Some simply don’t have faith.

But it is important to realize that, before God, there are no excuses. Tithing was established in the Law. Jesus even said that we “should tithe” (Matthew 23:23).

More than an obligation, this is something we should do with joy. For tithing is essential to receiving God’s blessings (Malachi 3:8-10). In fact, if we want to reap a generous harvest, we need to sow generously into His Kingdom (2 Corinthians 9:6).

Tithing is not just something for the rich. We don’t tithe when we feel like it. It is always true, regardless of world conditions. And, we tithe not just with our money but also our time and talent. When we tithe, we demonstrate that serving God is our highest priority, and that we trust Him.

Have faith that God wants to bless you, knowing that to receive these blessings, you need to give to Him from your resources. Remember that you owe everything to God, and that He has blessed you that you might bless others. Make tithing and giving central to your life!

Prayer: Father, I commit my time, talent, and treasure for You. Show me how I can give from what You have given me. I seek first Your Kingdom! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
