When Humility Turns Away Wrath

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When humility turns away wrath, 1 Samuel 25 shows how Abigail’s selfless intervention diffused conflict, reflected the heart of Christ, and demonstrated the power of compassion over pride.

“When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face … ‘On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. … Please forgive the trespass of your servant’” (1 Samuel 25:23–24, 28).

Abigail had done nothing wrong. It was her husband, Nabal, whose defiance had led to a conflict with David. Yet Abigail took it upon herself to seek out David, fall at his feet, and ask him to blame her for the offensive things her husband had done. She even brought David a gift while asking him for forgiveness.

David was moved by her example and her willingness to approach him on behalf of her husband. He recognized that God had used her (v. 32) and said: “Go up in peace. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition” (v. 35).

Abigail could have thought only about herself, but she demonstrated a spirit of humility and concern for others. She went beyond the call of duty and took the initiative to have her husband spared.

This was the kind of selflessness displayed by Jesus. Although He never committed any sin, He was “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). He “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8). And it was Jesus who said, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles” (Matthew 5:41).

Ask God for greater compassion for the people around you. He is looking for those who act with humility and selflessness, who bring Him glory and accomplish much for His Kingdom.

Reflection Question: Do you choose humility when wronged?

Prayer
Dear Father, help me to be an example of humble compassion for others and to sacrificially give of my time, talents, and treasures. In Jesus’ name, amen.
