When the End Doesn’t Justify the Means

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When the end doesn’t justify the means, 2 Samuel 4 reminds us that God values integrity over ambition and calls us to honor His standards rather than pursue success at any cost.

“Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring” (2 Samuel 4:8).

Recab and Baanah were valuable warriors for King Saul—“captains of raiding bands” (v. 2). But after Saul died, they tried to win David’s favor by assassinating Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son. They then cut off his head and brought it to David, fully expecting a reward. They thought their actions would clear the way for David to be king. But to David, Ish-bosheth wasn’t a rival; he was “a righteous man,” God’s anointed. David had these “wicked men” executed for their crime (v. 11).

Many people today follow the course of these two men, willing to do just about anything to get results, win promotions, or receive awards and power. The world may encourage you to believe that the end justifies the means, and you can do anything to accomplish your goals.

But remember that God is watching you, and He has higher standards. The Bible says to “be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust” (1 Peter 2:18). In every situation, remember “man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Make sure that you first seek God’s Kingdom. Obey His Word, and be faithful to His call on your life. Pray for others in the body of Christ. Don’t think of them as rivals but as brothers and sisters in His Kingdom.

Reflection Question: Are you honoring God’s standards of success?
