Stumbling Blocks

We easily criticize and notice flaws in others. Whenever we do, we are reminded of Jesus’s warning not to judge, so “you will not be judged” (Matthew 7:12). Realize that the way we judge others provides the standard by which we will be judged.

The Bible teaches that criticisms should be dealt with in the context of the body of Christ. Our goal, Jesus said, should be to build up the body by establishing stronger bonds and relationships. When we realize that as we are united, we can unleash more spiritual power. “If two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:19).

Before criticizing, we first should take the “log” out of our own eyes and be sure that our hearts and minds are clean (Matthew 7:3-5).

We should avoid providing stumbling blocks or obstacles. These could be anything we say or do, any gesture, any place we go. We must remember that “each one of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12).

Today, pray for discernment about how you react to others. Ask God to reveal if you are creating any stumbling blocks, particularly for new believers. Ask God to purify your heart and mind. In everything you do, seek to be pleasing to God, to be a good witness, and to build up His Kingdom.
