Qualifications to Succeed

Many were surprised when Saul was named Israel’s first king. Although he seemed unqualified, he had these distinguishing characteristics: He was tall and unusually handsome. He looked like a leader.

For a time, he was successful. But this success was the result of God’s favor, not his looks or abilities. Everything changed when Saul stopped submitting to God and started asserting his personal desires. He became possessive and selfish and started reinterpreting God’s Word. He drifted so far from God that God decided to remove him as king.

After God selected David to be Saul’s replacement, Samuel had many questions. Unlike Saul, David did not look like a leader and seemed to lack experience. But God told Samuel, “God does not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Many people think they can succeed based on their looks, resources, experience, or connections. In the world, these attributes may be keys to success. But God has different qualifications. He looks for humble people who submit to Him and obey His Word. God grants success to those who are faithful and filled with His Spirit.

Seek to have a heart that pleases God. Surrender to the control of His Spirit. Ask Him to use you to accomplish His purposes. Remember, God wants to bless you, but the key to success is to depend on Him.
