Pravda

How could they persuade the masses and spark a revolution? Grappling with these questions, a group of Russian socialists in the early 20th century decided to start publishing a newspaper. They called it Pravda, the Russian word for “truth.”

Pravda was founded on this day in 1908, and it was first published on May 5, 1912. Its original publishers included the notorious revolutionary, Leon Trotsky. But gradually control was seized by Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (who came to be called “Lenin”).

The Russian government sought to suppress its publication. Yet Pravda continued to be published underground. Then, when the Communist Party gained control of Russia in 1918, Pravda became its official publication.

The name was ironic, for Lenin made no secret of his view that he could define “truth” in his own terms. He did not hesitate to spread rumors and false reports, or engage in character assassinations, if it was to his advantage. Those who controlled Pravda after his death in 1924 continued to decide for themselves what was “true.”

Many throughout history have followed this pattern. Even men like Pilate. Jesus made clear that He represented real Truth. He was born “to testify to the truth.” This truth was pure and selfless, not subject to political forces or personal opinions. It could not be manipulated.

But Pilate had a different idea, asking, “What is truth?”

Many today ask the same question, thinking they can define truth in their own terms. Yet the Bible reminds us that Jesus alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). And the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (John 14:17).

Do you want to know what is true? Submit your life to God. Follow Jesus. Obey His Word, for it always is true (Psalm 119:142).
