What’s the greatest power available to you? Electricity changed the world, but Acts 1:8 points to something greater—the power of the Holy Spirit at work in your life.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

In a poll conducted in 2005, the Gallup organization asked Americans what they felt was “the greatest invention ever made.” The top response? Electricity. Amazingly, the same answer had also topped the list when this question was asked in 1947. Despite the passing of generations and all the progress that took place during a period of more than 50 years, people still recognized the powerful impact electricity made on their lives.

Just as electrical power changed the world, we also need power in the spiritual realm. God’s power is greater than any force on earth. It can change our lives in ways we cannot comprehend. It can bring us healing and perform miracles, open doors that seem to be closed, provide wisdom to solve seemingly unsolvable problems, give hope to the hopeless, and bring us joy and peace.

The Bible reminds us to seek the source of this power: the Holy Spirit who was sent to empower those who are committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Acts 5:32). If we’ve given our lives to Christ, the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is God with us and in us (John 14:17), always by our side to be our counselor, defender, and teacher.

Seek to be filled with the Spirit, just like the first-century disciples. Then be ready for His power to be unleashed, enabling you to be a witness and impact others for Christ.
