Power of a Single Word

Born in Hungary on this day in 1855, Arthur Nikisch became one of the most important conductors of his time. Known to have great sensitivity, he established a warm rapport with musicians wherever he performed. These traits helped catapult him to international prominence, directing major ensembles including the Boston Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic.

Some conductors thought it necessary to be flamboyant or dramatic. But Nikisch proved he could produce magical results with just quiet, sparing gestures. Always conducting from memory, his technique was clear and enabled him to draw rich tones from the ensembles he directed.

Nikisch had an engaging personality, and orchestras held him in high regard. A famed musician described how his gentle spirit was apparent from the moment he entered a rehearsal. Walking without drama, he would bow to the musicians and greet them with such charm that, on many occasions, they responded with enthusiastic applause. They even jumped to their feet at times.

Nikisch demonstrated principles like those Jesus employed. Facing situations that might have seemed hopeless, Jesus didn’t resort to wild gestures or raise His voice. With just a single word, He could still the wind, heal a cripple, or drive out a demon.

What does it take to have this kind of authority? Be filled with the Spirit. Pray and be in harmony with the Father. Be ready to step out in faith. Be confident in God and sensitive to the leading of the Spirit.
