Perspective on the Future

As we approach the end of one year, it seems natural to think ahead. To ponder what lies before us. To consider options. To make plans and resolutions.

It can be hard to remember that life is brief and fragile. We easily can expect our present circumstances to continue indefinitely. And it can be difficult to trust God. We can take His blessing and protection for granted, and not seek Him like we should.

However, James warned that life is like “a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” It quickly dissipates and is gone without a trace.

If we trust in our own resources and abilities, we can become boastful, arrogant, and proud. But the Bible urges us to realize our limitations, and continually submit our plans to God. Instead of being confident in ourselves, we should say, “If the Lord wills.”

Solomon wrote, “A man’s steps are of the Lord; how then can a man understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24). God knows that what we think is a blessing may, in fact, be a curse. What we may feel is the right path may lead to disaster.

As we look ahead to a new year, make a commitment to trust in God. To commit your decisions and plans to Him. To ask Him to guide and direct you. You can be confident that He knows what is best for you. And He knows the future.
