Paradise Lost

John Milton found himself in the middle of political and religious turmoil. Born on this day in 1608, he occupied important government positions but had the greatest impact through his epic poem Paradise Lost. Having gone blind, Milton wrote this poem entirely through dictation.

In this poem, Milton retold the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve, dealing with subjects ranging from relationships to spiritual warfare. He described how Satan and other fallen angels were banished to hell. But, determined to keep God’s people from receiving the blessings He prepared, Satan organized an attack.

Adam and Eve yielded to temptation, eating fruit that had been off-limits. Both were convinced that the fruit was beneficial. However, after falling asleep they had nightmares and awoke feeling guilt and shame. Because of their disobedience, they were cast out of paradise.

Having successfully corrupted Adam and Eve, Satan returned triumphantly to hell. But soon other fallen angels and Satan himself became snakes, unable to talk. And the story continues. Milton’s poem reminds us how Satan desires to tempt us, trick us into believing his lies and keep us from experiencing God’s blessings.
