Where Did the Others Go?

“Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together).”

Acts 1:15 NASB

On a lonely hill outside of Bethlehem, a group of shepherds heard the news that “a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” was born. This small group was so excited that they hurried to see the baby. In the years to come, thousands more would gather to hear and see Jesus.

When He began His ministry, “large crowds followed Him.” At least 5,000 men (plus women and children) gathered as He taught by the sea. A vast crowd cheered Him during His triumphal entry.

Yet after His death, only 120 men and women gathered together in the upper room. Where were the crowds? The shepherds? The thousands who had been healed and heard His teaching? The throngs who cheered Him?

Many simply had moved on. Others were preoccupied and busy. Some were afraid that they might be arrested. Many must have been discouraged and decided just to conform. Some must have thought that Jesus had died and that the whole movement had ended.

Whatever their excuse, they had demonstrated a weak faith, and a lack of commitment. The capacity for compromise.

How easy it can be to be like this, zealous one moment but watch as that zeal fades away. When the emotional highs have ended, and we face criticisms and problems.

As Jesus described in the parable of the sower, some respond to the Word with joy. But everything is “temporary,” and there is “no firm root.” And they often fall away “when affliction or persecution arises because of the word” (Matthew 13:20-21).

Today, many follow popular movements. But how many are like the 120? Totally committed. Faithful in every season. These are the people, like those 120, on whom God can pour out special blessings. Who experience the miracles and greater maturity. Who go through problems, but emerge triumphant and victorious.

Prayer:  Father, give me a spirit of persistence. I seek first Your Kingdom. I trust my life to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
