In Your Place

Daily Devotional3 Minutes

What does it mean that Jesus died in your place? From the Levites to the Lamb of God, Scripture unfolds one rescue plan—substitution.

“List all the firstborn males of the people of Israel … taking the number of their names. And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel” (Numbers 3:40–41).

God told Moses to number all the firstborn sons of Israel, each one by name. Then he was to take the Levites “instead of” the firstborn. In doing this, He was illustrating the principle of substitution.

Looking back in history, on the night before the exodus from Egypt, God told His people to “consecrate to me all the firstborn,” for it “is mine” (Exodus 13:2). On that same night, the death angel killed the firstborn of every home in Egypt that was without the mark of the blood of a lamb.

God later said His people were to take the Levites “instead of all the firstborn.” The Levites were to be their substitutes.

The ultimate expression of this principle comes through the person of Jesus. Because of our sins, we deserve death. But the “free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Jesus became our substitute, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

The message of the Gospel is that we all face the consequences of our sin. But “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Remember that Jesus died in your place, paying the penalty for all your sin. Accept His free gift in your own life, and dedicate yourself to sharing this Good News with others.

Reflection Question: Write a prayer expressing your gratitude to God for His gift of salvation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the principle of substitution in the Bible?

Substitution means one stands in the place of another. God set the Levites apart “instead of” Israel’s firstborn, foreshadowing the ultimate substitute—Jesus, the Lamb of God, who died in our place to take away sin (John 1:29).

How does Jesus take our place?

Because sin earns death (Romans 6:23), Jesus took the penalty we deserved by dying in our place. Through faith in Him we receive the free gift of eternal life instead of the judgment our sin requires.
