A Cheerful Giver

Daily Devotional3 Minutes

Does God care more about what you give or how you give it? Scripture is clear: “God loves a cheerful giver”—one whose generosity flows from the heart, not from pressure.

“Each one shall keep his holy donations: whatever anyone gives to the priest shall be his” (Numbers 5:10).

Everything we have comes from God, for “every good gift … is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). We have the responsibility of managing these gifts – not out of compulsion but out of love. We see this principle in action when the Israelites were in the wilderness and the Tabernacle was to be constructed with voluntary offerings from those “of a generous heart” (Exodus 35:4–5).

Paul reinforced this concept by teaching that decisions about financial giving should be made with no pressure: “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The Law specified that the giver transferred control of their gift to the priest. When we give something to God, we relinquish our ownership—it becomes His.

We must also remember what Jesus taught: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). The process of sowing requires us to release our seed and relinquish control.

Ask God to give you understanding and discernment about how you sow your seeds and where you give your gifts. Be responsible with the resources God has given you, and make sure to plant into “good soil” (Matthew 13:8).

When you give, you’re giving back to Him from the bountiful blessings He’s given you.

Reflection Question: Would you call yourself a cheerful, generous giver?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that God loves a cheerful giver?

From 2 Corinthians 9:7, it means God values the heart behind giving more than the amount. He invites generosity that flows from love and gladness—“not reluctantly or under compulsion.”

What does the Bible teach about stewardship?

Scripture teaches that everything we have comes from God (James 1:17), making us stewards rather than owners. We’re called to manage our time, talents, and resources faithfully and to give with discernment and a generous heart.

Prayer
Father, I dedicate my time, talents, and treasures to You. Help me to be a faithful steward of the resources You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
