Strategies for the Battle

Facing a battle you didn’t choose? Before Israel ever drew a sword, God gave them His strategy—do not fear, for He goes with you to give the victory.

“When you go out to war against your enemies … ‘let not your heart faint. Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is he who goes with you … to give you the victory’” (Deuteronomy 20:1–4).

Alone … without a homeland … isolated in the wilderness. When Israel came into conflict with the armies of the land, they had every reason to be afraid. But God gave them the strategies they needed to succeed.

First, they needed to trust Him absolutely, confident that He was with them. Then, to be victorious, they had to be freed from fear. Anyone who was afraid was to depart so he would not “make the heart of his fellows melt like his own” (v. 8).

They were not to be overwhelmed by the challenges they faced. They were to be strong in the Spirit, led into battle by their priests.

Everyone had a role to play, but not everyone was to be a warrior. Some were sent home: all who had built a new house but had not dedicated it, those who had planted a vineyard but had not begun to use its fruit, and those who were engaged but not yet married (vs. 5–7). While teaching the importance of family commitments, God also was teaching that being a warrior was a full-time commitment. No one was to go to war who had other distractions or priorities.

To be victorious in your own battles, make sure that you trust in God absolutely and are confident in Him. Banish fear. Seek to be strong in the Spirit and freed from distractions. Dedicate yourself to fulfilling His calling on your life.
