Godliness With Contentment

On this date in 1893, the New York Stock Market crashed. The impact was dramatic, resulting in more than three years of deep economic depression. By the end of that first year, 600 banks and 74 railroads had gone out of business. Thousands of people lost their jobs. Many roamed the streets, seeking work.

In our time, the world has seen its share of economic turmoil. Many people live in fear of crashes, worried about volatile markets and ever-changing political conditions. The fact is that those who place their hope in this world have much to fear. But Christians have an insurance policy against changing financial trends: investing in the Kingdom of God.

Some think that riches provide the best insurance policy. However, Paul warned that pursuing worldly wealth can lead to temptation and snares. This pursuit can foster harmful desires which lead to ruin.

Paul explained that money itself was not the problem, but rather “the love of money.” This was “a root of all sorts of evil.” In fact, he said, some who longed for money “have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (v. 10).

In contrast, Paul stressed the importance of contentment. He wrote that “godliness with contentment is great gain” (NIV). He wanted us to think about all that God has provided and promised, realizing that, “if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content” (v. 8).

The Bible tells us that God doesn’t want us to fear financial difficulties. This means you! Start by asking God to help you be content with what He’s given you. Be sure to seek first His Kingdom, confident that He will take care of you. Invest in His Kingdom!
