Doing What You Can

Many people feel powerless, seemingly unable to make meaningful changes in their lives. Other people are preoccupied, unmoved by the needs of others. Some see mountains and assume they cannot be climbed. Others see armies and assume defeat is inevitable. Some encounter problems and look the other way.

Addressing attitudes like these, 18th-century British statesman Edmund Burke once said, “Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who does nothing because he could only do a little.” He realized that each person could do something. We are accountable for what we do with our time and resources.

The Bible reminds us that God looks to see how we respond to circumstances. We should be like the Good Samaritan who reached out in compassion to help a man who had been wounded. We should not be like the priest and the Levite who saw the man but didn’t help him (Luke 10:30-37).

God knows our hearts. He knows what He has given us and what we can do. He has blessed us that we might be a blessing to others. He looks for people ready to serve, who see needs and are ready to help.

Make sure that you are not guilty of doing nothing because you could only do a little. Seek to bless others with the blessings God has given to you. Ask Him to show you how you can help and bless others with what you have.
