Discerning Deception

Discerning Deception

In many ways, Abimelech resembles a modern politician or ambitious business tycoon. Desiring to become the leader of his homeland, he campaigned by making promises, reminding people that Gideon was his father. Seeking to consolidate power, he hired reckless adventurers to murder his brothers. Having eliminated the opposition, Abimelech was crowned king.

But his brother Jotham had escaped and warned others about Abimelech’s character. Facing additional threats, he sent troops to silence the opposition, killing many people in the process. In the resulting conflict, he was hit on the head by a millstone dropped by a woman. For Abimelech, this was an intolerable fate. He had a servant kill him so no one could say, “A woman killed him” (v. 54).

Many people act like Abimelech. Craving power, they are willing to do anything to achieve their goals. They make promises they have no intention of keeping. They manipulate and deceive when necessary. Such people may appear to succeed. But they always reap what they sow. God knows the truth.

Remember this when you consider other people. No matter what they say, many are self-centered, driven to achieve their goals. They deceive if necessary. For a season, they may fool others, but God is never fooled! He sees our hearts and real motives.

In everything you do, aim to please God, always seeking first His Kingdom. In every situation, be on guard against deception. Pursue His discernment.
