Compassion

“Agabus stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world . . . Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.” Acts 11:27-30 NKJV

Prophecy was a central, normal part of the early church, and Agabus was one of the men in those days called to a prophetic ministry. God entrusted him with an important revelation about a “great famine” that would sweep throughout the world. He was sending this warning so His people might be prepared.

But this was not just to be a spiritual preparation. They needed to take action. In fact, this was an opportunity for Christians to demonstrate the practical part of their faith. Proving that they were willing to help others, they collected resources and sent them to fellow Believers in Judea.

These early Christians provided an example of how Believers are to respond to the Spirit, and demonstrate their faith. We need to remember that we all are part of the Body of Christ, and that we all need each other. In fact, God blesses each of us that we might be a blessing to others. He gives us resources and abilities, that we might use them to minister to others, to reach Souls with the Gospel.

Today, ask God to give you a heart of compassion. Particularly during the days leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ birth, many are lonely and discouraged. And the needs are real. All around you, people are hurting, looking for someone who cares for them. Someone willing to help meet their needs, pray for them, or show concern.

Do not be preoccupied by your own interests, but look for ways in which you can bless others, bring hope, and show the love of God.

Prayer: Father, give me a compassion for souls. I dedicate my time, talent, and treasure that the Gospel might be proclaimed, and that others may know the love of Jesus. In His name. Amen.
