Terry once lived what many would call the American dream—financial security, a thriving business, and a family bound together by love. From the outside, his life looked full and stable. Inside, everything was about to change.

“My wife and I used to have three houses, a business, and a family who loved each other,” Terry recalls. “We had healthy children and were financially blessed.”

Then, in a matter of weeks, tragedy struck with devastating force. Terry lost his wife, his father, and his grandmother. As he struggled to process that profound grief, his family endured even more trauma—his son attempted suicide, and his daughter was struck by a truck, leaving her a paralyzed double amputee. The weight of grief became unbearable. Like Job in Scripture, Terry’s world collapsed one loss at a time. Unable to face the pain in his own strength, he reached for anything that promised escape—drugs, alcohol, prescription pills, and destructive relationships.

“I had no purpose for my life, other than to avoid pain,” he says. “The painkillers and drugs helped to deaden the pain of losing my family, and I became addicted to feeling numb.”

What began as an attempt to survive quickly became spiritual and physical bondage. Addiction stole what little stability remained, and Terry’s downward spiral led to prison—twice. His children were so certain of the tragic outcome that they purchased his gravesite, believing it was only a matter of time before he would be found dead. To everyone around him, it looked like the end of the story.

Overcoming Addiction Through Faith in Jesus Christ

During Terry’s second sentencing, a frustrated judge spoke words that would echo in his heart. “I’m tired of your ways, Terry. Your daughter, son, friends, and the police are all tired of your choices. When will this end?”

Behind bars, Terry realized something deeper than his physical confinement. He was living in an internal prison—one built by pain, addiction, and hopelessness. The judge’s question followed him day and night: “When will this end?”

Not long after his release, Terry woke up at 4:00 a.m. and turned on the television. What seemed like an ordinary moment became a divine interruption. A preacher was sharing a message through one of Inspiration Ministries’ platforms. As Terry watched, clarity replaced confusion. He finally understood that a self-directed life had led him to destruction—and that only true surrender could lead him out. In that quiet early-morning hour, Terry turned his life over to Jesus Christ, discovering a path to peace after a family tragedy.

Finding Biblical Help for Addiction and Hopelessness

Salvation didn’t erase Terry’s past, but it radically transformed his future. Step by step, God began rebuilding what had been broken. Terry reconciled with his children. He found a sponsor to walk with him through addiction recovery. He met his fiancée, a woman who faithfully loves him and prays with him.

Most importantly, he discovered a deep, internal peace that earthly circumstances could not take away.

“I no longer get drunk or high, nor do I deceive my family or friends anymore. The Lord has set me free from anger and given me a new life money could never buy!”
