Tormented No More!
For years, Shirley secretly battled tormenting thoughts every single day. Fear followed her to work, into her home, and into the quiet moments no one else could see. Then one Friday afternoon, overwhelmed and exhausted, she realized something had to change.
From the outside, Shirley appeared strong and composed. No one would have guessed how fiercely she was battling anxiety, paralyzing fear, and thoughts that seemed to grow more intrusive by the day. The uneasiness in the pit of her stomach could last for hours, leaving her drained and desperate for peace.
“One Friday afternoon, I came home from my job, where I had been fighting negative thoughts all week,” she recalls. “I was being shaken with intense fear and anxiety in every area of my life.”
Shirley sank into her living room chair. She had fought all week, but now she felt overwhelmed. She knew she could not keep going this way. She needed someone to remind her what the psalmist already knew: “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him” (Psalm 42:11).
In that moment, Shirley became convinced that she was facing a spiritual battle. She knew she needed prayer, so she called the International Prayer Center at Inspiration Ministries.
She worried that the prayer minister might think she sounded “crazy,” but instead she found someone who listened, understood, and prayed with her.
“I was incredibly relieved,” Shirley says. “The Holy Spirit helped her understand—she was a Godsend!”
Together, Shirley and the prayer minister turned to Ephesians 6.
“She led me to put on the full armor of God from Ephesians 6,” Shirley explains. “I learned to hide under the Lord’s covering and find protection from the enemy’s fiery darts.”
Paul begins his teaching about the armor of God with these words: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might” (Ephesians 6:10).
Shirley had been fighting hard. Now she was learning something different: how to stand in the strength of the Lord.
When Fear Feels Overwhelming
The Lord does not want His children to live under the rule of fear. Yet even those who trust Him can experience moments when fear feels overwhelming.
David understood that tension. He wrote, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3).
David did not deny that he felt afraid. He chose where he would place his trust.
There may be days when we have to make that same choice again and again. We may need to return to Scripture and remind ourselves of what God has said. We may need to pray honestly, ask someone to pray with us, or sing worship to the Lord when our emotions are pulling us in another direction.
Throughout the Psalms, we see hearts in distress turn toward God in prayer and praise. Worship does not deny the battle. It lifts our eyes from the battle to the One who is greater.
Faith does not require us to pretend fear is not there. It teaches us where to turn when fear comes.
For Shirley, that turning point began during her prayer call.
“Immediately, I felt better! And when I woke up the next day, I knew something had changed,” she shares.
The relief was real, but Shirley’s testimony did not end with that phone call. She began learning how to respond to troubling thoughts by returning to the truth of God’s Word.
Renewing Her Mind with God’s Word
Since that call, Shirley has learned to combat intrusive thoughts by renewing her mind with Scripture.
Romans 12:2 tells believers, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
Renewing our minds is not simply trying to think happier thoughts. It is allowing the truth of God’s Word to shape what we believe. When fear tells us one thing, we return to what God has said. When our emotions become overwhelming, we can remind our souls to put their hope in God.
Shirley often leaned on the promise of Isaiah 54:17: “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed.” This became one of the promises she returned to as she learned to stand on God’s Word.
God does not promise His people that they will never face a battle. But He does teach us how to stand when the battle comes.
Learning to Stand
The change in Shirley’s life continued. The anxiety attacks are gone, and she says she continues to grow stronger.
“I am feeling better in every way, and I’m amazed by the consistent improvement in my life,” Shirley says gratefully. “Since that phone call to your International Prayer Center, I’ve been set free from torment, and now I know how to stand firm in God’s protection against the enemy!”
That final phrase is an important part of Shirley’s testimony. She learned how to stand—not in her own strength, but by continuing to turn toward God, believe His Word, and place her hope in Him.
“God has transformed my life!” she reports. “Thank you for praying for me, Inspiration Ministries!”
When Your Own Soul Feels Downcast
Perhaps fear has been loud in your life lately. You may love the Lord and still find yourself wrestling with thoughts that leave you anxious or overwhelmed.
The presence of a battle does not mean the Lord has abandoned you. When fear rises, bring it to Him. Open His Word and allow His truth to speak louder than the thoughts troubling your heart. Pray honestly, worship Him, and allow trusted believers to stand with you in prayer.
The psalmist spoke to his own troubled soul: “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God” (Psalm 42:11). We can do the same, even when our emotions have not yet caught up with what we know to be true.
Most importantly, keep your eyes on Jesus Christ. Through His death on the cross and His resurrection, He offers forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life to everyone who places their faith in Him.
Shirley’s story did not begin with a plan or a five-step strategy. It began with a phone call—an honest reach for prayer in the middle of a battle she could no longer fight alone.
If fear or anxiety is weighing on you today, you do not have to face it alone. Reach out to our prayer team today, and let someone stand with you in prayer, just as a prayer minister stood with Shirley.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Bible say about anxiety and fear?
Scripture doesn’t ask believers to pretend fear isn’t real. David wrote, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3)—acknowledging fear while still choosing where to place his trust.
How can prayer help with anxiety?
Prayer connects us with God and with other believers who can stand with us. Ephesians 6:10 reminds us that strength “in the Lord and in the strength of his might”—not in ourselves—is where real relief begins.
What is the “armor of God” in Ephesians 6?
Paul’s teaching on the armor of God describes spiritual protection—including the shield of faith—against fear, doubt, and attack, rather than a battle fought in our own strength.
How do you renew your mind according to Romans 12:2?
Romans 12:2 calls believers to be “transformed by the renewal of your mind”—replacing anxious thoughts with the truth of Scripture, deliberately and repeatedly, rather than simply trying to think positively.
