How to Experience God’s Favor in Your Finances

If I called you today and asked, “How can I pray for you?” what would your answer be?

Would you say, “Dave, I desperately need a financial breakthrough”?

Perhaps rising costs have stretched your budget. Maybe an unexpected expense has left you wondering how you’ll pay the bills. Or perhaps you’re simply praying for greater financial stability so you can care for your family and be more generous toward others.

Friend, if that’s your prayer today, I have encouraging news.

Your greatest need isn’t simply more money. It’s God’s favor.

Why? Because when God’s favor rests upon your life, He can provide in ways money alone never could. He opens doors no one else can open. He gives wisdom where there was confusion. He creates opportunities you never imagined, and He faithfully supplies what you need as you walk with Him.

King David understood this truth. That’s why he wrote:

“Those who seek the LORD lack no good thing” (Psalm 34:10, ESV).

Your greatest financial breakthrough begins by seeking the God who owns everything and delights in caring for His children.

But How Does God’s Favor Reach Our Finances?

Here’s an important truth many believers never fully understand.

One of the primary ways God’s favor is expressed in our finances is through the Kingdom principle of seedtime and harvest.

After the flood, God established an enduring principle for life on earth that continues to this day:

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest … shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22, ESV).

This is more than a natural, agricultural law. It’s one of God’s foundational Kingdom principles.

Everything God asks us to sow—whether our time, talents, forgiveness, love, or finances—contains the potential for a harvest far greater than the seed itself.

From Genesis to Revelation, we see that our generous God delights in multiplying what is willingly placed into His hands. Time after time, He blesses faith-filled obedience and produces a harvest far greater than the seed that was sown.

That’s why Paul wrote:

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6, ESV).

I want to be very clear … God’s favor isn’t something we can earn. It is something we experience as we trust Him enough to obey.

• Daniel remained faithful in Babylon, and God gave him great favor even in captivity.

Each story is different, but each reveals the same pattern:

David’s Costly Act of Worship

One of the clearest illustrations of this principle occurred in King David’s life.

Near the end of his reign, Israel was suffering under a devastating plague because David had disobeyed God by taking a census. Broken over the suffering his actions had brought upon the nation, David cried out to the Lord for mercy.

God instructed him to build an altar on the threshing floor of Araunah.

Seeing the king’s need, Araunah generously offered to give David the threshing floor, the oxen, and everything needed for the sacrifice.

David refused.

“I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24, ESV).

David understood that true worship always carries an element of real sacrifice.

So he purchased the threshing floor and everything needed for the offering. Then he built the altar and presented his sacrifice to the Lord.

What happened next is remarkable.

God answered David’s prayer, and the plague was supernaturally stopped.

Again, let me be clear: David didn’t purchase God’s favor. His costly act of obedient faith positioned him to experience God’s mercy, restoration, and blessing.

What Is God Asking You to Place in His Hands?

All of us eventually arrive at a threshing floor crossroads. It’s the place where faith must become obedient action.

For some, that means extending forgiveness.

For others, it means stepping into a new calling.

For many of us, it includes trusting God with our finances through faithful stewardship and generous giving.

Understand this: whenever God asks us to release something into His hands, it is never because He wants less for us. It is because He has something greater in mind.

A seed cannot become a harvest while it remains in your hand. Only what is surrendered to God can be multiplied by Him.

Trust the God Who Gives the Harvest

If you’re praying for a financial breakthrough today, don’t focus only on the size of your need. If what you have today isn’t enough to meet your need, ask God what step of faith He’s calling you to take. Then trust Him enough to obey.

The God who established seedtime and harvest is still faithful today. He still delights in blessing obedience. He still lovingly provides for His children. And He is still able to do “far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20, ESV).

My prayer is that as you seek Him first and walk in faith-filled obedience, you’ll discover what David knew all along:

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6, ESV).

Your financial breakthrough begins with a greater measure of God’s favor. And when His favor rests upon your life, you’ll discover that He truly is able to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19, ESV).
