Friendship with God

How wonderful to think that God wants to be our friend! He wants us not to approach Him with just cold legalism, but to have an intimate relationship with Him. He told Israel that they were descendants of Abraham. But to God, Abraham was not just a person; he was God’s friend.

God had a similar relationship with Moses. The Bible says, “The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend” (Exodus 33:11).

Friendship was central to the ministry of Jesus as well. He told His disciples, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you” (John 15:14-15).

The Bible urges us to realize that God wants this kind of relationship with each of us. He wants to be your friend, too. He seeks to fellowship with us, teach us, take away our fears, give us strength, and uphold us with His “righteous right hand” (v. 10).

Do not stay aloof from Him or treat Him with distance or detachment. He wants the kind of intimate relationship that you have with your best friends. Spend time with Him and talk with Him. Seek to foster this relationship. He is your God and your friend.
