From Hezbollah to Jesus: Afshin’s Miraculous Story of Forgiveness
Afshin Javid did not expect Jesus to answer him. He had been raised to oppose the name of Christ, not call upon it. From childhood, his life was shaped by devotion, discipline, and a deep desire to serve God as he understood Him. Born into a strict Iranian Shiite Muslim family, Afshin carried the weight of spiritual expectation long before he fully understood it.
His grandfather, a respected Islamic leader, believed Afshin had a special calling and declared him his spiritual heir. Afshin took that calling seriously. He studied the Koran with passion, longed for the supernatural, and dreamed of becoming a missionary for Islam—someone who would convert Christians he believed were misguided. In his mind, this was obedience. This was purpose. This was the path to pleasing God.
But the path he followed eventually led him into Hezbollah, then into prison, then into a darkness he could not overcome. And there, in the place where Afshin had no strength left, Jesus met him.

Afshin’s Early Life in Islam
From the time Afshin could walk, faith was not simply part of his life. It was the center of it. His home was marked by religious duty, family legacy, and a deep reverence for Islam. Afshin was taught that devotion required surrender. He learned early that spiritual seriousness was expected of him. And he wanted to be faithful.
Even as a boy, Afshin was drawn to spiritual power. He read the Koran intensely. He prayed. He sought. He wanted his life to matter for God. But his zeal began to take a dangerous shape. The more committed he became, the more convinced he was that Christians needed to be corrected. He believed they were lost. He believed it was his mission to bring them into Islam. Afshin was not half-hearted. He was ready to give everything.
How Afshin Became Involved with Hezbollah
As Afshin grew older, his devotion became more militant. What began as religious commitment hardened into fierce radicalism. He joined Hezbollah’s military ranks and served for three intense years. Each step pulled him deeper into a world of violence, loyalty, and spiritual darkness. Yet in his mind, he was serving God. He believed he was fighting for a holy purpose.
Then came his arrest. Afshin was traveling with illegal passports when he was taken into custody. Prison might have broken another man. For Afshin, it only seemed to intensify his religious zeal. Behind bars, he became even more disciplined, more devoted, and more consumed.
“In prison, instead of praying three times a day, I prayed five. I read the Koran every ten days. People came to me for revenge because when I prayed, their enemies grew sick. I became power hungry.”
Afshin had influence in prison. People came to him because they believed his prayers carried power. But power is not the same as peace. What surrounded Afshin was not freedom. It was control, fear, and darkness. And one night, that darkness became impossible to ignore.
The Prison Cell Encounter That Changed Afshin’s Life
Afshin was alone on the cold floor of his prison cell, kneeling in meditation as he had done countless times before. Then the room changed. A dark presence entered. It was not imaginary. It was not symbolic. Afshin described it as heavy, suffocating, and evil. Suddenly, the man who had been known for spiritual power found himself powerless.
“I felt it choking the life out of me,” he recalls. “I commanded it to leave in Allah’s name, but I was dying.”
Afshin tried to fight it with everything he knew. He commanded it to leave. He called on the name he had always trusted. But nothing changed. He was dying. In desperation, Afshin cried out the only words he had left: “God, help me!”
Then a voice came into the darkness. It was gentle, clear, and unmistakable: “Call on the name of Jesus.”
For Afshin, that name represented everything he had rejected. Jesus was the name he had been taught to resist. The name he had opposed. The name he never imagined would be his help. But death was pressing against him. Barely able to breathe, Afshin whispered: “Jesus … if You are true … show me Yourself.”
When Afshin Called on Jesus
The darkness vanished. In its place came peace. Not ordinary calm. Not emotional relief. Afshin described it as pure, overwhelming, living peace—the kind only Christ can give.
But peace did not immediately answer all his questions. Afshin was confused. Why would Jesus help him? Why would the One he had opposed respond with mercy? What did it mean that the name of Jesus had power when everything else had failed?
For two weeks, Afshin fasted and prayed. He begged Allah for direction. He waited for clarity. But there was silence. Fear began to rise in him. He wondered whether he had committed the unforgivable sin by calling on Jesus. He felt trapped between what he had always believed and what he had just experienced.
Finally, Afshin reached the end of himself. Then light filled his cell. Overwhelmed by the weight of his sin, he collapsed in tears. “Allah doesn’t visit humans,” he thought. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
Jesus Spoke Forgiveness Over Afshin
A voice spoke the words Afshin never expected to hear: “I forgive you.”
Those words shattered him. Afshin had known religious striving. He had known discipline. He had known zeal, fear, power, and duty. But forgiveness—certain, personal, spoken forgiveness—was different.
“Immediately, I knew I was forgiven! In Islam, forgiveness isn’t known until judgment day; not even Mohammed knew his fate. I cried, ‘Who are You?’ The voice answered: ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’”
Afshin was stunned. He whispered, “But what is Your name?” The answer came: “Jesus Christ, the Lord.”
In that moment, everything changed. The man who had once opposed Jesus encountered Him as Savior. The man who had chased spiritual power discovered grace. The man who had lived under fear heard the voice of Christ speak forgiveness over him.
From Hezbollah to Christ: A New Calling
But Jesus did not only forgive Afshin. He called him. Soon after, Jesus showed Afshin a vision of people from every nation, every culture, and every generation. It was a picture far larger than one man’s prison cell. Far larger than one country, one background, or one story.
Then came the question: “Who will tell them of My forgiveness?”
Afshin answered without hesitation: “Send me.”
The mission of his life changed. He had once wanted to convert Christians to Islam. Now he would tell the world about the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. He had once believed his purpose was tied to revenge and violence. Now Jesus called him to love, grace, and reconciliation. The prison cell became the place of his surrender. The darkness became the backdrop for Christ’s light.
Afshin’s Life After Encountering Jesus
Decades later, Afshin still speaks of that night with emotion. His voice trembles because the memory is not distant to him. The mercy of Jesus is still near. He knows what he was. He knows what Jesus did. And he knows no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
“Islam taught me, ‘Kill in the name of Allah.’ But Jesus said, ‘Love in My way. Forgive in My way.’”
That is the heart of Afshin Javid’s story. Jesus did not simply give Afshin a new religion. He gave him a new heart. He moved him from fear to peace. From hatred to love. From violence to forgiveness. From spiritual darkness to the light of Christ.
Can Jesus Meet You in Your Darkest Place?
Afshin’s story is not only about what happened in one prison cell years ago. It is a testimony to who Jesus still is today. Jesus is not distant from the brokenhearted. He is not afraid of dark places. He is not limited by a person’s past. He is not unwilling to forgive.
- He meets people behind bars.
- He meets people in broken homes.
- He meets people in quiet fears.
- He meets people in desperate places.
And He can meet you.
Scripture says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). Wherever you are, the same Jesus who stepped into Afshin’s prison cell is able to step into your life. He is faithful. He is near. And He is calling you toward forgiveness, freedom, and new life in Him.
